The flutter of wings catches me by surprise but at least this time I know the sound. Surely I'm in trouble, hence the visit. I give a little chuckle thinking my dad's probably come to tell me to stay away from Nevaeh. That's not happening.

A big smile plastered to my face, I turn around ready to annoy the crap out of him.

I stop dead in my tracks as I take in his face and eyes. This is different. This is hurt. He looks... empty.

"Dad?" I'm hesitant.

He doesn't say anything, just looks at me blankly as a tear rolls down his cheeks.

There's a hurried knock on the door, Nevaeh opens the door and runs into my arms throwing her arms around my neck.

"My dad was just here." And she swallows hard seeming to hold back tears.

I nod in the direction of my dad who's awoken from his dream like state.

"You don't know." Nevaeh's eyes are huge and I barely catch her whisper.

Panic sets in as I realise he must be coming to warn us. Something must be on to us.

"Elijah, please sit down," he asks, his voice breaking.

I interlock our fingers just in case Nevaeh thinks of leaving and lead her to the bed where we both sit down. Her grip on my fingers is quite strong and her head is bent.

I look at my dad one more time.

"C'mon dad, what's up?"

"Your mother is gone. She's dead." His voice cracks.

"What?"

"I'm so sorry." And he tries to move closer wanting to console me.

"No! You're lying."

I can't believe him. I won't believe him.

I came here to protect her, so that she could be safe. She can't be dead.

I peel my hand from Nevaeh's and stand up.

What he's saying is starting to sink in.

I move to the TV stand and rest both hands on the edge.

"She can't be gone." My voice comes out as a hoarse whisper.

"I'm sorry Elijah, it happened so fast, I could not get to her in time. They were too fast." He continues.

"Are you saying she was killed?"

"Yes, it was some of Behemoths disciples," he answers

Not knowing or caring who Behemoth is, the reality of the situation sinks in.

"This is your fault!" I say my voice still hoarse.

"AARRggghhh" I shout as I shove everything off the stand. "This is your fault."

I turn to him accusingly.

"You sent me away from her. I was supposed to protect her."

And I break down, tears streaming down my face, I sink to the floor.

The pit in my stomach feels as if my entire being is swallowed into the darkness.

My mom is gone.

My mom is gone.

Sobs wrack my body and I'm barely aware of Nevaeh at my side.

"Where is her body, I need to get her body, she can't be alone. I need to see her." I say to my dad after the sobs have subsided but not being able to look at him. All I can picture is my mom lying lifeless in a dark cell somewhere.
