Chapter Fourteen: Decisions, Decisions
My head was pounding. It felt like I had been holding my breath for a long time, and I had just taken a big breath. My whole body ached, but the part of me that hurt the most, was my torso. It took me a minute to remember what happened.
I tried to open my eyes, but it took a lot of effort to just do that. When I did open my eyes, I opened them to a very bright light. It burned my eyes, so I shut them again, but not before I slightly moaned. I heard someone rush to my side.
“Hey! I think she’s awake!” Someone yelled, but it wasn’t the voice I was suspecting it to be.
“Nico?” I asked groggily. I opened my eyes to see a pair of warm, brown eyes starring down at me.
“Yes?” Worry, but at the same time relief, coated the warm eyes. He was smiling a comforting smile.
I thought about what to say for a minute. I had a few questions. But the one I asked surprised even myself. “Where’s Connor?” His smile faltered for moment. It was obvious that this question bugged him, and I felt really bad, but I don’t really know why.
“Right here.” I heard the smile in Connor’s voice. I tilted my head a little to see him. I gasped when I saw him. He had a huge gash across his forehead that was somewhat covered up. He had a big bruise on his right cheek bone that looked about as bad as my wrist did. He also had scratched all over him.
“Connor! What happened to you?” I managed to croak out.
He smiled. “Oh, this?” he asked motioning to himself. “Aw. It’s nothing.” he shrugged.
I glared at him. Nico shot him a look too. “Come on man. Just tell her.” a smirk was playing at his lips.
Connor’s smiled faltered. “Well, when you and I were on the beach… well something shot out of no where and threw you at least a mile down the beach. I was about to go and get you when the same thing hit me in the complete opposite direction and into the woods. I got cut up and scratched.”
I swallowed. “Is that where you got the bruise?”
“No. I gave that to him.” Nico said, his face serious.
“What!?!” I screeched, ready to hit him.
A smiled appeared on Nico’s face. “I was just kidding. Sorry.” he said laughing.
Connor whacked his arm. “What? I was just joking around!”
“Dude, you’re gonna upset her!”
Nico looked down. “Sorry.”
I sighed and leaned back against the bed. “Okay. So what did happen then?” I asked.
“Well when the thing hit me, it hit me in the face.” He said looking away.
I somehow managed to stop the giggle from coming out of my mouth. “Are you okay?” I asked him, tying to get a good look at him.
“I’m fine. It’s you that we’ve all been worried about.” he said looking me over.
Nico nodded. “Yeah. How do you feel? You were pretty bad when we found you.”
“I thought Connor found me?” I asked a little confused. Perhaps I had just dreamed him running at me.
“Well he did, but then he was freaking out when he saw all the blood-” he stopped for a minute, to see if I was okay then looked at Connor who was shooting death glares at him.”-And that’s when I stepped in. I calmed him down and then carried you here.”
