Chapter 1

Kate sat at her desk looking at the murder board, now home to her son, he wasn't dead but he had been kidnapped. An FBI agent was helping them and Kate found herself at the precinct instead of out helping the boys look for her son. It had been two days since he went missing with only two calls but no ransom. Kate saw Agent Harrison out of the corner of her eye and looked at her.

"Anything?" She asked Harrison shook her head sitting on the desk next to Kate.

"It may be a while before we hear anything." Harrison said Kate only nodded.

"I know but that doesn't make the waiting any easier." Kate said looking down at her hands and her wedding band not sure of where her husband had slipped off to. "With so much time on our hands why don't you explain to me what happened?"

"I beg your pardon?" Harrison said.

"I know it's you mom" Kate said looking at her mother.

"How did you figure it out?"

"You said something earlier, something that only my mom would say. So since you don't look anything like her I had my friend run your fingerprint and she did some digging and found it was a match. I'm guessing your death was faked but I still haven't been able to figure out why." Kate said still in disbelief that this was her mother, she looked young and nothing like her mother, but while Kate looked at her she could see similarities.

"I didn't know how to tell you or else I would have."

"Mom just tell me"

"It's a long story" She said quickly.

"I've got time" Kate said looking at the board again.

"I started doing work on the side for the FBI when you were about 17, I would be assigned cases where they needed legal help and needed someone they could trust. Do you know about my case I was working on?" Johanna asked.

"of course" Kate said as Rick walked out from the break room.

"As I started looking into it I realized it was bigger than I realized and when I went to the FBI about it they informed me this could be their way of getting to the bottom of the 'cop' situation so I stayed on it." Rick walked over handing Kate a coffee while he pulled her desk chair around, Johanna looked at Kate wondering if she should go on, Kate only nodded. "That night when I went to the ally I was stabbed but I had an FBI agent following me and he got me out of there. They put me in a safe house for a couple years but somehow I was found and that's when I got the makeover and was made into an FBI agent." Johanna said with a sigh. "I saw you once, in DC when you first joined, I was informed that I couldn't speak to you, but I would manage get close enough."

"Did dad know about the FBI?"

"Yeah, but at the time it wasn't a big deal and I never thought it would take me away from you and your dad"

"Did you know I was a cop?"

"Not until a few years ago, I saw the news report about your shooting."

"If you looked different then why did you have to stay?"

"They always told me it was for my safety but believe me I tried. But I kept up with you, I've read all your books Mr. Castle" Johanna said with a soft smile at Rick.

"How much did you know?" Kate asked. "About my life I mean?"

"Not everything but I know you two have worked together for a long time and got married two years ago things like that. It was bug news when your son was born." Johanna said, Kate and Rick both looked at each other.

"Keep thinking about that." Rick said Kate nodded.

"Me too" Kate said taking a sip of coffee.

"I'm going to go see it they have heard anything yet" Johanna said getting up.

Rick moved closer to Kate laying his hands on her hips.

"You doing okay?" He asked.

"I don't know, I don't want to think about my mom to much until we find Carson."

"They'll find him Kate" Rick said moving to stand up, kissing her forehead softly. The phone rang in the other room and both of them ran in waiting to hear the news, Gate's stood at the phone while Johanna never took her eyes off Kate. Hanging up the phone Gates looked at Kate and Rick.

"Your baby's fine" Both let out a relieved sigh.

"What's wrong?" Kate asked when Gate's didn't smile.

"Detective Esposito was shot" Kate gasped grabbing Ricks hand. Their son was safe but she prayed it wasn't at the cost of her best friends life.
