I wake up to a brightly lit bedroom. The sun streams in my window filling my room with light. Trying to fall back asleep is pointless.
Rubbing my eyes I stand up with a yawn, and sleepily make my way to the bathroom to brush my teeth and hair. When I get there and look in the mirror, my long, curly, brown hair is more of a rat's nest than I expected. My dark blue eyes look almost dull gray. I never really like the way I look, but today I'm particularly unimpressed with my appearance. I brush my teeth and start untangling the mess I call my hair. After I finished brushing my hair I braid it over my left shoulder. I can smell the amazing smells of Sunday morning breakfast, making their way up from downstairs.
"It smells good down there," I say as I walk down the stairs. I make my way into the kitchen to see my mom dressed in her business clothes cooking breakfast.
"Here's your plate sweetheart," My mom smiles as she holds a plate full of delicious-looking bacon and eggs out for me. I take the plate and sit at the table to wait for mom to get her food. I hear a loud thump on the table, looking up I see my younger brother smiling down at me.
"What are you doing?" I ask with a confused look.
"Don't touch the floor the floor is lava," He giggles.
"Thomas, come on get down from there. You're going to fall and hurt yourself," I say grabbing him off the table.
"Oh come on scar, you're no fun."
Ever since he could talk, Thomas has always called me scar instead of Scarlet. Thomas is only 5 and I'm 18 leaving a significant age gap between the two of us.
Mom sets a plate of food in front of  Thomas and he immediately starts eating. Mom sits down next to me with her plate and smiles.
"You guys better be good well I'm away. Scarlet, you can have Ruby over as long as you guys watch Thomas. Please at least do the dishes for me." Mom lectures. I nod as I shove a piece of bacon in my mouth. When we finish breakfast I help mom clean up the kitchen. We hear a car outside.
"My ride is here," mom says as she looks out the front window. Before heading out the door she gives both me and Thomas a hug and kiss. Thomas and I wave as the car pulls away. Mom is going on a two-week business trip and decided to carpool with her coworker. My dad works at a big company in the city and only comes home every other weekend. So that means I get to babysit Thomas for a week.
I walk into the living room to put on some cartoons for Thomas. Sitting on the couch I flip through the channels until I find the kids station, which is playing some weird kids show I've never heard of. The cartoon was getting boring so I decided to call Ruby and invite her over.
A few hours later I hear a knock at the door. I open the door to see Ruby with a huge over packed hockey bag.
"What's all that for? you're not moving in," I say gesturing to Ruby's bag.
"I brought my Xbox, clothes and everything else I need," She smiles.
"Ok, well let's take it upstairs to my room". Ruby nods and we make our way up to my room.
Ruby has short red hair, green eyes and freckles that cover her face. She stands only a little shorter than me and her waist is much thinner than mine. I've always admired the way she looks. Ruby and I have been friends for as long as I can remember. Our parents used to take us to the same playgroup and I've gone to every birthday party she's ever had. At this point she's basically my sister. We set up the Xbox and started playing Mortal combat. It didn't take long before Thomas was in my room, so we had to switch to a more appropriate game. We ate Kraft dinner and hotdogs for lunch. The rest of the afternoon consisted of board games, hide and go seek and lots more little games to keep Thomas entertained. For supper, we had leftover lasagna that we heated in the microwave.  We all decided to watch a movie that got about halfway finished before Thomas fell asleep. Ruby and I finish the movie. Afterwards, I carry Thomas up to his bed. I place him in his bed and tuck him into his green and blue striped covers. I move the blond hair away from his face and kiss his forehead, the way mom always did for me when I was little. Then I go back into my room where Ruby is sitting at the end of my bed waiting for me. I join her on my bed and we talk for a bit. Then Ruby yawns and stretches her shoulders.
"I'm ready to sleep, " Ruby says before rolling over and climbing under the covers.  It never takes long for her to fall asleep. I climb under the covers and lay there for a while listening to the quiet of the night.

I wake up to a small tap on my shoulder, it startles me a little bit. I roll over to see Thomas.
"Scar there's a monster outside," he says with fear in his voice. Thomas isn't a kid who would usually talk about monsters witch makes me a little confused. I get up to see what he's talking about.
"Where is the monster?" I ask rubbing the sleep from my eyes. Thomas points at the window with his lip quivering in fear. I've never seen him so scared of something before. I step closer and peer out the window. I see a woman, her skin is a pale shade of gray the colour of death. Her arm hangs limp at her side. Blood drips from her misshapen mouth. The light blue nightgown she has on is covered in blood and bits of dirt. She walks unnaturally, a way no living person would walk. Not far down the street, two men are hunching over the body of a young girl. I know from her stark black hair that it is twelve year old Samantha, the little girl from up the street. The road is covered in her fresh blood. I back away from the window with my hand gripping at my chest, horrified to look back. I feel tears forming in my eyes.
"Ruby, get up!" I manage to say just loud enough to wake her. She sits up and stretches.
"What's wrong?" She asks. I put my finger to my lips and motion for her to come to the window.
"Look outside and tell me if you see what I see," I whisper. Ruby looks out into the street and nearly falls backwards. I caught her before she could fall over. We just stand there trying to rationalize the unrealistic horrors that lay outside the house.
"I have to call mom," I say as I grab my phone. I try to call but I don't have enough battery, because I forgot to plug my phone in last night. I try the landline but the call won't go through.
"We need to get out of here!" Ruby says as she looks back out the window.
"You go downstairs with Thomas and pack as much food as you can. There's somethings I need to grab from up here, I'll be down in a minute. Just stay away from the windows," I say trying to be as calm as I possibly can. They both start taking things out of the hockey bag before taking it downstairs to fill it with food. I grab my old backpack and shove a few pieces of clothes into the bottom. Then I go to Thomas' room to grab his favourite teddy bear and some clothes for him.  After that, I go into my parents' room. I take the picture of our family that is on the bedside table. I take my mom's gold chain and my father's silver ring. I put the ring on the chain and put it around my neck. My dad keeps a twenty-two calibre rifle under his bed. I never asked him why but I'm definitely glad to have it right now. I grab the gun and the brick of bullets, then I go downstairs. Ruby and Thomas have the hockey bag almost full of cans and other random things we might need. I grab the large kitchen knife and slip it into my bag.
"My parents left me with the car, it's in the garage," I say to Ruby. Ruby takes the bag and I hold Thomas' hand as we go into the garage. I get Thomas into the car and buckle him in as Ruby puts the hockey bag in the back. I put my backpack next to Thomas on the seat.
"Stay here ok," I say to Thomas before closing the car door.
"I'm going to run in and get pillows and blankets," Ruby says.
"Go quick," I reply.
Ruby disappears into the house. I decide to grab anything use full and put it in the back of the car. I climb up on a cooler to reach for a tarp that is on the top of an old metal shelf. Ruby comes back into the garage, she puts her load in the trunk and is coming to help me when we hear it. The woman from earlier is trying to get in through the small open window across the garage. I lose my balance and fall off the cooler hitting my upper arm off something sharp on the way down. It hurts like hell, but I don't have time to react to it. I just get up and run to the passenger side of the car and get in. Ruby is already in the front and has the car started. She hits the automatic button to open the garage door and it opens painfully slowly. When the door is open she drives as fast as she can away.
