Chapter 5 (A confused car ride)

I wake up in the middle of the king-sized bed. My arm is screaming in pain. I look down to see that my cut is carefully dressed with a white gauze wrap. Slowly I begin to sit up and look around the room, I see Fin on the couch but I don't see Ruby or Thomas.
"Good morning sleeping beauty, how are you feeling?" Fin says with a smile. I smile back at him.
"I think I'm ok, what happened?" I reply.
"You passed out, so I moved you into the bed. I took a look at your arm and it looked angry. I looked for a first aid kit and luckily I found one in the kitchen. I hope it's okay that I took the liberty of bandaging it for you. I'd like to check it again later if that's okay." Fin says.
"Where's Ruby and Thomas?" I ask beginning to get a little concerned.
"No worries their just downstairs." He pauses for a second and looks at me. "Do you think you can get up?" He asks with concern in his voice.
"I think so," I reply before turning so that my feet are off the side of the bed. I slowly get up, my legs feel a little weak and shaky.
"You ok?" Fin asks as he starts walking toward me. I nod yes and take a couple of wobbly steps before finding my balance.
"I think we should get out of here as soon as possible. I think theirs one of those crazy people outside, I heard more noises earlier." Fin says in his kind but authoritative tone.
"Hey Fin how's she doing?" I hear Ruby ask from the hallway.
"Oh, you're up! How are you feeling? You've been out for most of the day." Ruby says as she walks into the room.
"I'm ok, just a little weak," I reply. At that moment an extreme pain shoots threw my arm. I grab my arm to stop the pain but it is no use. I feel weak again. I can feel myself falling but Fin catches me before I hit the floor.
"I think her cut is infected we need to find ..." Was all I heard before my eyes fade to black. I can feel myself drift in and out of consciousness.

"We need to get her to a doctor."
"I think I might know someone who can help."

"Ruby!"
"Thomas I'm coming."

I hear a gunshot and I feel someone's arms around me.
I try to open my eyes but I can't, they feel too heavy. I try to speak but I can't open my mouth. I try to move but  I'm too weak. I'm scared, I know there's danger but I can't do anything about it. I feel like I'm frozen.

I hear voices and I slowly open my eyes. I'm in the car. I figure Fin must have been the one who carried me out. A small yawn escapes my lips.
"What happened back there, and where are we going?" I ask nobody in particular.
"Your arm isn't looking so good, we need to get you to my dad's friend Bill. He owns a small pharmacy relatively nearby. Plus he has training as a nurse hopefully he can help us. And as for what happened back there, we were talking about what to do and one of those crazy people got in. It tried to get Thomas but Ruby got downstairs just in time." Fin says.
"We'll be hitting the town in about a half-hour. " Ruby adds.
My stomach starts to growl.
"I'm hungry," I mutter to myself.
"Me too, can we have a snack?" Thomas asks enthusiastically.
"We'll stop for a quick stretch break and food soon," Fin says from the passenger seat where he sits looking at a map.
"Can I play when we stop?" Thomas asks excitedly.
"We'll see when we stop, ok." Answers Fin. Thomas has a big smile across his face. I envy how carefree and naive he is in all this. How he can be so positive is beyond me. Soon my thoughts begin to wander to my mom and dad, if they are ok and if I will ever see them again. I quickly pushed those thoughts from my mind. I look out the window at the tree line. I see someone hunched over eating what looks like the mangled body of a red squirrel. They stop eating and look straight at me as the car passes by. Its eyes are pale and lifeless.
"Did you see that, it looked right at me?" I ask with confusion.
"Yeah, did you notice it was eating a squirrel? Since when do zombies eat animals?" Fin replied.
"This isn't a movie Fin this is actually happening," Ruby says with a hint of frustration. After that the car goes quiet.
