I was absolutely horrified. I just wanted it all to be a dream, but I knew it wasn't. If you ever thought having a bad dream was the worst thing ever, you've obviously never lived in a nightmare like this. Kilik slowly walks towards the lifeless body of the man. He pulls a pocket knife from his back pocket and stabs the man through the back of his head.
"He shouldn't be able to come back now." He says. He scoops up the man's gun and puts it in his pocket. I can't speak or even move. I'm still holding tightly to Fin's hand. I feel myself starting to cry. Fin hugs me and wipes away my tears.
"Scarlet it's ok now it's over," I can hear the shock in his voice.
"I know this may seem wrong, but should we see what they had," Ruby says.
"I mean it's not like they can use it anymore," Kilik replies.
"Should we bury them?" I say through my sniffles.
"We don't have anything to bury them with," Fin says. Kilik looks in the back of the truck and holds up a shovel.
"Well, they had this." He says "Fin and I can take care of them if you girls want to look in the truck."
I feel conflicted about it but I agree to look with Ruby.
Ruby opens the driver's side and pulls out a small box.
"Do you know what this is?" Ruby asks with a hint of a smile. I shake my head no.
"It's a full box of bullets for our new toy. And there are three more of these boxes all full, and one half a box," Ruby says. She is a little too excited about this, but I guess I can see why.
I find two flashlights and a box of matches in the other door. I also find a map on the dashboard.
"I thought we had a map," Ruby says confused.
"We do, I just thought it would be good to have more than one. Plus maybe this one shows more than ours does, I mean in the way of restaurants, gas stations, motels and that kind of thing. A safe place to stay maybe," I reply.
"I see your point," She says.
"They didn't have food with them," I point out. I remember the woman earlier when she had asked if we had food. She didn't seem like a bad person. In truth neither of the two did. The man most likely had a similar mindset as Kilik, untrusting and fearful. He seemed to care greatly about the woman. He was trying to protect her. I feel bad for the woman and the man, they were just trying to survive.
"Scarlet, are you ok? You've been staring at nothing for like 5 minutes, " Ruby says putting a hand on my shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm good just thinking," I reply.
"The guys are almost done digging a hole."
"Hey, can one of you girls let Zena out for a pee?" Kilik asks. I walk to the car to let Zena out. Thomas is somehow still fast asleep in the front seat. I let Zena out, she walks around sniffing the ground. She does her business and then she goes over to Kilik.
"Hey, big girl," Kilik says petting Zena's head. She kisses his face and wags her tail. It makes me happy to see her so happy.
"Fin the gas tank is almost full in this truck," Ruby says.
"Let me come take a look, if it's not diesel fuel we can probably siphon it for the car," Fin says.
"I have a better idea," Kilik says. "Why don't I just drive the truck. It might be nice to have two vehicles. Plus it will be a lot less crowded in the car for you guys."
"The car still has a good amount of gas," Ruby says.
The sun has almost fully risen now lighting the sky. I lean against the hood of the truck with my elbows. I pull out the map I took from the truck and look at it. It has a route marked in highlighter.
"There's a route marked on here," I say to no one in particular.
"let me see," Kilik says as he walks over to me. I hand the map over to him.
"It doesn't really look helpful," Kilik says with a thoughtful look. "I do see a small motel on here tho. It's just on the next turn off." Ruby looks over his shoulder to see what we're talking about. He points to the motel on the map.
"Let's meet there," he says.
"How far is it?" Ruby asks.
"Turn write at the next turnoff, it will be not far down the road on your left. Kilik replies. I grab the map from the car, it takes me a minute to find the motel on it. I fumble trying to fold the map back up. Kilik takes the other map from me he skillfully folds my map and hands it back to me. I take note that he kept the other one.
We finish the task of burying the two dead bodies. Despite not being dead long the woman seems to let off a sickly sweet odour. We bury them together in their shallow grave. We all stood there for a few minutes in silence.
"We should go," Kilik says eventually. We all nod in agreement.
"Let's go, Zena." He says as he starts to walk to the truck. Ruby, Fin and I make our way to the car.
"Be safe." Ruby smiles. "We'll follow you to the motel."
Kilik smiles back and says "We shouldn't take too long to get there." he opens the door and lets Zena hop in. He gets in and turns the key, the engine roars to life. We hop in the car and follow closely behind Kilik.
"You comfortable" ask fin as he looked down at me. He clearly noticed how much I'm enjoying not having a huge dog leaning on me.
"I actually am." I smile. It doesn't take long to get to the turnoff. I look out the window as we drive. The road we're on doesn't have any houses, mainly just thick forest with a couple of empty camp sights here and there.
"This must be it," Ruby says as she turns into a small parking lot. The red brick motel is not very big at all, it only has six rooms all lined in a row. Each has a dark green door with a silver medal number plate on it. On the other side of the parking lot, there is a small building with matching red bricks. The sine on the door is labelled "office". There are no vehicles besides us in the parking lot, which I take as a good sign.
