As we walk out to the car Ruby and Thomas get out.
"What took so long? I was starting to get worried," Ruby says.
"The place is empty, so we took a look around inside to make sure it's safe. A raccoon was in the basement. It got spooked and went out through a hole in the window. We fixed the hole so it shouldn't get back in," Fin explains.
I feel a small tug on my pant leg and look down to see Thomas.
"Scar can we go inside now?" Thomas mumbles.
"Yep, let's go," Fin says with a slight smile.
"Should we grab anything from the car?" asks Ruby.
"I'll grab us something to eat and be inside in a minute," I answer. Everyone begins to head inside as I grab a box of cereal from the car. I look around outside before heading in. I don't see anything different.
The light inside the house is slowly fading as night begins to claim its place in the sky. After a bit of looking we find some candles in a drawer. We all decide to cover the windows so we don't draw attention to ourselves. We cover the windows with blankets from around the house. Afterwards, the daylight is almost entirely gone and it's really dark. We light a few candles to provide enough light so we can see. Ruby finds some apple juice boxes in the kitchen and we all figure the owner of the house won't mind if we take 2. We share the box of cereal and the juice, it isn't much of a meal but we are all happy to have something in our stomachs. We talk for a while, and it almost feels like we aren't here because of people eating each other. Thomas is starts to yawn and rub his eyes. And after a while, he falls fast asleep halfway on my lap.
"I think we should get some sleep." I stat carefully as I shift Thomas so I can get up.
"I can carry him upstairs if you want," Offers Fin.
I shake my head no and carefully pick my little brother up. The stairs make a slight creaking noise with every step as I go up. I take Thomas into the main bedroom at the end of the hall. I place him in the middle of the king-size on the far side of the room. I tuck him in with the covers, then I carefully move the hair away from his forehead and kiss the top of his head.
"I won't let anything hurt you," I whisper before Fin and Ruby join me in the room. Fin is carrying the gun and Ruby has the knife.
"Close the door please," Ruby says, she sounds tired. I close the door and lock it.  Ruby climbs into one side of the bed careful to not wake Thomas. She falls asleep quickly as usual.
"Are you going to bed?" I ask Fin. I secretly hope that he might stay up with me even just a little while. I am really scared to go to sleep.
"I'm going to stay up for a bit," He replies, he must have seen the fear in my face. There is a small old sofa in the corner and I decide to sit down. Fin begins to walk towards me. I realize for the first time since he's been with us, that he is basically a total stranger. I tense as he gets closer to me and he stops not far from the sofa.
"May I sit?" he says with a hint of a smile. I relax and softly nod yes. He smiles again before sitting down.
"I'm cold," I whisper extremely quietly. Fin opens his arms for me to move closer, I look at him for a second and he smiles. His smile makes me feel safe so I move closer. He puts his arm over my shoulder, but not in the way a lover would just in the way a close friend would. After a while, I hear Fin's breathing pattern slow indicating he is asleep. Everything in the house is silent despite the breathing of my sleeping companions. My thoughts drift to the carnage that I had witnessed in one day. I look over at Fin his arm is still over my shoulder and his head is resting against the wall. He looks so peaceful.
Suddenly I hear a noise coming from somewhere outside. I gently nudge Fin to wake him up and as I do he bolts upright and looks around for danger.
"Fin I heard something outside," I say quietly. He gets up slowly and looks out the window.
"I don't see anything out there," he says.
I yawn slightly and he yawns back as if echoing me.
"I can stay up a bit if you want," he says rubbing his eyes and stretching.
"I am starting to get tired, but are you sure you've slept enough," I say as an other yawn escapes my mouth. Fin nods and I stand up but as I do a wave of dizziness hits me and I fall to the floor. Fin rushes to my side but I can't make out his face it's bleary and distorted.
"Scarlet are you okay?" Fin asks. His voice sounds distant. my eyes soon go blank leaving me in complete darkness.
