Chapter 6 (A hole lot of crazies)

"I have to pee !" Thomas whimpers.
"I think we're safe to stop here," Ruby says as she pulls off the road. The place we stop at has a stream just a few feet from the road. It feels safe but I know better than to let my guard down after everything that's been going on lately.
"Here take this," Fin says as he hands back the knife. I take it without question.
"let's get out, but be careful," Fin says. We all nod in understanding before getting out. I look up and see that the sky is overcast and looks as though it could rain at any second. I look at the stream and think about collecting some water for drinking later.
"I don't want to go alone," Thomas says as he grabs my hand and pulls me with him to a bush just on the edge of the tree line. I look away as he goes potty. Thomas rinses his hands in a small puddle and stands in front of me.
"Can I play now," He says giving me the face, you know the one with the puppy dog eyes and everything. I look at Fin and give him the "help me" look. He comes over to talk to Thomas, so I don't have to be the bad guy.
"Let's play tic-tac-toe." Fin suggests as he sits down on the ground and grabs a stick. Thomas's face lights up with excitement as he sits on the ground with Fin. The sight of the boys playing almost makes me forget about everything else that has been happening around us. It is at that moment that I realize how innocent and young Thomas really is, he shouldn't have to go through this.
"Hey Scarlet, can you come here for a minute," Ruby yells. I walk to the car where Ruby is routing through the hockey bag. When I get close she starts handing me things, like two fruit cups, a small package of cookies, a bottle of water and a granola bar.
"I don't think we should stay long. So let's eat and get back on the road." Ruby says with a worried face.
"I agree, it's just too quiet," I reply. Ruby nods and we walk over to where the boys are sitting on the ground.
"You guys want something to eat?" Ruby asks the boys. Her question is answered by smiling and nodding from both boys. They look like little puppies bagging, it's adorable.

Ruby gives the granola bar and a fruit cup to the boys. I take the other fruit cup and Ruby takes the cookies. We all eat our snacks and share the water bottle until it's empty. I tell Ruby my idea about collecting some of the water from the stream for later, and she agrees. I get up and head down to the stream to fill the bottle, while the others start walking back to the car.
"Scarlet we need to leave!"  Ruby yells from the car. I look up to see 3 of the crazies coming toward me. I run as fast as I can and hop in the back with Thomas. Fin is in the driver's seat this time and Ruby is on the passenger side. One of the crazies runs into the back of the car.
"GO! " I yell. The car lurches forward and the woman falls face-first on the ground. We speed away leaving the dead looking crazy people behind. I don't feel good my head spins and my arm is screaming in pain.
"You ok?" Ruby asks with a concerned look on her face. I nod yes softly and she gives me a look only a best friend would.
"Seriously I know you're lying," She says as she hands me a water bottle.
"Drink Scarlet." She sounds worried, so I take the bottle and drink.
"I'm worried about you," Ruby mumbles .
The car is silent as we approach the small town. It looks abandoned like everyone had just gotten up and left. 
"Are you sure that guy will still be here, this town looks empty," I say to Fin. 
"He has to be here." Fin replies. We saw the small drug store a few blocks away. As we got closer we could see that the front window was smashed. It looks as though it has been ransacked.
"Fin there's nothing left," Ruby says as Fin stops in front of the store.
"No there's got to be something. " Fin insists. Fin gets out and Ruby Follows. I grabbed the car door handle.
"Can I come?" Thomas says with the puppy dog eyes again. I look around outside and see nothing.
"Ok, but stay close to me," I reply. We all climb inside the drug store through the broken window. All I see is empty shelves, and there is no sign of this Bill guy.
"What now?" Thomas asks.
"There's gotta be something, keep looking," Fin says. I feel a pain shoot through my arm and a strange feeling in my head.
"We need to get out of here now, I don't feel right. " I say.  Thomas grabs my hand and holds it tightly. I hear a scream from the streets. 
"Someone needs help!" Thomas says frantically as he tugs on my arm. I hold my knife tightly and walk toward the broken window. I gently push Thomas behind me as I look out into the street. There is a little girl, she is screaming and kicking at one of the crazy people that has hold of her ankle. The man has no legs and it looks mangled. Blood trails behind it as it desperately tries to get to the girl. He opens and closes his jaws frantically.
"Don't look!" I say to Thomas as I step out into the street. I run over to where the girl is struggling. I try to grab the man but he nearly bites my arm. The man focuses his attention on me and the girl runs to the window where Fin and Ruby are standing.
"Sir something is wrong with you and you need to stop." I cry. He doesn't stop trying to grab me. I kick him away but he doesn't stop. I hold out my knife trying to get him to stop.
"I don't want to hurt you." He grabs my leg and doesn't let go. He tries to bite me again. I stab him in the back with my knife, but he doesn't stop moving. It doesn't seem to even phase him. I stab him again and he still doesn't stop. I stab him once more in the head and he lets go and falls limp to the ground. The little girl stands frozen in fear, her brown eyes just staring at the now truly dead man.
"Are you okay?" I ask. The girl doesn't respond, instead, she starts sobbing. A car alarm goes off somewhere down the street. I turn to see more of the crazies, they seem to be drawn by the sound of the car alarm. I ran to the car where the others had already gotten in. We drive as fast as we can away, but soon we're stopped by several cars that are crashed in the middle of the street.
"We have to run!" Ruby says. I grab my backpack and open the door. The little girl is shaking in fear, so I hand my knife to Fin and pick her up. Ruby grabs Thomas's hand, and we start running. The crazies slowly start to take notice of us and begin to follow us. Fin runs ahead and around a corner, for a moment we lost sight of him.
"In here!" Fin says as he opens a door to one of the buildings. We all slip inside quickly. Fin shuts it as fast as he can. I could hear the crazy people shambling past outside. The sound of another car alarm draws them away.
