Chapter 15

I woke up cold and hungry. I reached my arm across the bed finding it empty. I sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes.
"Good morning," Fin smiled.
" morning," I yawned.
" here, you need to eat. I already ate my half so the rest is yours," Fin smiled as he handed me the half empty can of fruit salad. I took it eagerly. "Ruby is still sleeping and Kilik is out with Zeina. I was up most of the night," he thought for a moment. "You know it's been quiet all night. Maybe we could stay here, even if only for a couple days."
" That doesn't sound like a bad idea, maybe we could go into town and scavenge a bit. I mean we could all use a change of clothes," I replied. The door opened and Kilik stepped in with Zeina letting her off the leash.
" what are you guys talking about?" Kilik smiled as he walked toward us.
" Scarlet and I were just talking about maybe staying here a couple days. Possibly checking out the town a bit, " Fin replied.
" sounds good to me," yawned Ruby as she sat up and stretched. " I'm hungry."
" We can share some peaches, " Kilik said grabbing the can and the can opener off the floor. He opened the can and sat next to Ruby on the bed. Ruby took the can from Kilik and started drinking the peach juice, before shoving a couple large slices of peaches into her mouth.
" I did say we could share," kilik smiled. Ruby shoved a couple more slices in her mouth before handing the can over.  I finish my can of fruit salad and put the empty can on the floor beside the bed. I pulled the covers off me and got out of bed. I walked over to where I had left my pants on the floor last night and slipped them on. I felt eyes on me as I did so.  I turned and sat next to fin on the floor. I thought this was as good of time as any to tell Ruby and Kilik about my arm.
" I need to tell you guys something," I said as I reached up to untie the shirt sleeve from my arm. " my cut is healed." I removed the sleeve to reveal my fully healed wound. The green lines were more noticeable now.
" oh my god! How is that possible,"Ruby said in disbelief.
" It doesn't look quite right," Kilik looked confused.
" well there is one other thing I haven't told you. Back on the road when I started screaming. Well it was because I was looking back at myself threw the corpse's eyes. I think it has something to do with the green lines around my cut. Maybe I got like parshaley infected so I have like a weird connection with the living dead," I stated.
" ok, what the hell!" Ruby partially yells.
" well to be honest I don't understand it either,but it's exactly like I said," I replied.
" there's dead people out there trying to eat us and you guys think this is weird. Considering everything I think this is a good thing. I mean if Scarlet can somehow sence  the dead coming, maybe she'll be able to keep us safe," Kilik said with a thoughtful look.
" what if this means she's going to turn?" Ruby asked.
" if she hasn't turned already do you really think she will now," Fin answered.
" I guess you do have a point," Ruby said.
" I promise I feel fine, and if I didn't I'd tell you," I reassured.
" there's not enough room in the jeep,"  Fin said seemingly out of nowhere. " I mean if we want to go into the town to scavenge, we won't have room to bring anything back with all the stuff that's already in there," he clarified.
" How about we unload every thing and one of us stays here with Zeina and Toby," Kilik suggested.
"Sounds like a plan," Fin said.

It took about a half hour to get the stuff out of the jeep and in to the room. Every thing was piled neatly in the corner in a semi organized mess. We left a couple cans and a box of bullets for the hand gun in the jeep, just in case.
" You Guys go. I'll stay here, and maybe make an inventory of everything." Kilik smiled.
" keep your self safe well we're gone, ok." Ruby said with a sincere look.
" I will, and you guys better stay safe out there."
We left Kilik with my sword knowing he would be less likely to need a weapon. Fin tuck the hand gun in to his pocket and we climbed into the jeep. I sat in the front seat this time, Ruby was in the seat behind me and Fin drove. The drive was rather quiet, it being very short taking no longer than a half hour for us to get to the edge of the small town. And boy was small a good word for the place. The town consisted of a convenience sized grocery store, a bar, a hair salon, a few houses some of which seemed as tho they could be cottages. A lake sat of the edge of the town with several docks reaching out into the water. I thought for a moment about swimming in the lake jurying the summer. But that thought disappeared as I brought myself back to the hear and now.
" we should check out the store first and then focus on the houses. The bar and the salon are the least of our worries." Fin told us.
" this place seems extremely quiet." Ruby said.
" well I think most of the houses are cottages, so there probably aren't a lot of people who live here." Fin replied. It was only just getting close to the end of spring, meaning not a lot of people would be at their cottage homes. The town was empty for the same reason the motel was empty.
