I wake up when the car goes over a large hole in the road.
"Where are we?" I ask as I sit up and try to orient myself.
"We're about an hour away from the nearest town. I think we should maybe stop for the night, get some rest and head to the next town in the morning." Ruby states.
"I think that would be best," agrees Fin.
"Maybe in that old farmhouse," I point to a house not far down the road.
"Sounds like a good plan," Ruby says as the car begins to slow.
"One of us should stay outside with Thomas in case one of those things try's to attack, " I say to no one in particular.
"One of those things?" Fin questions.
"I don't really think they can be considered people anymore. They show no emotions, they kill without hesitation, they eat human flesh. That guy back there got shot and stood up like it was nothing." I feel myself losing control. Tears begin to form In my eyes, Fin puts his hand on my face and wipes them away before they can fall.
"It's ok we'll hopefully be able to stay here tonight and we'll figure all this out tomorrow. I'm sure the police are going to get it all under control soon." Fin's voice soothes me.
"I'll stay here, You guys go see if we can stay the night," Ruby says.
"We should take the gun just in case," I mumble out as I hand Ruby the kitchen knife. Fin grabs the gun and I prepare myself to get out of the safety of the car again.
"Be careful guys," Ruby says as Fin and I get out. Fin holds the gun at his side as we approach the front door. I look around as we walk closer. The barn is old and looks as though it hasn't been a home for animals in a long time. The barn's roof looks as though it may cave in at any second. Some of the boards on the sides are missing, the rest are weathered, with holes. The red and white paint is almost entirely peeled off. The house looks in much better shape with light blue plastic siding and a green tin roof. It is a two-story house with a big pine tree out front. It feels welcoming and gives me a sense of safety witch I'm desperately craving right now.
"Ok, you ready Scarlet? " asks Fin snapping me out of my daze. I swallow the lump that has formed in my throat and nod. Fin stands at the door ready to knock. He is in front of me with the gun and I am close behind, not wanting to be too far away from my only protection. He knocks on the glass of the front door, nobody answers. He knocks a second time and again there is no answer. He tries the doorknob and to our surprise, it opens.
"Hello is anyone home?" Fin calls out. No answer to be heard. We hesitantly step inside. I look to the floor and see that there are no shoes.
"I don't think anyone is here," I mutter.
"I think so too. We should take a quick look around before telling the others to come in."
I flick the light switch but no light turns on.
"We saw a couple of power lines down on the way here, " Fin explains.
We search every room on the main floor and every room upstairs, we found nothing lurking in the shadows. The last place to look is the basement that has an old wooden door which is painted white. As we open the door we hear something moving from somewhere down in the old damp basement.
"Did you hear that? " I say just loud enough for Fin to hear.
He nods, puts his finger to his lips and slowly starts walking down the steps.
"I'll go look, you wait here," Fin says in a hushed but authoritative tone.
"I'm not letting you go down there by yourself! " I say a little louder than I intended. A loud thump followed by scratching comes from the basement.
"Please just let me come I don't want to stay up here by myself, " I whisper so quietly I can barely hear myself.
After a couple of minutes of silence Fin answers, "you can come, but be careful."  I nod and Fin starts walking down the steps with the rifle raised and ready to fire. I follow close behind him. The basement consists of a small room with a shelf full of jars, a small table piled with random odds and ends. And a back room, that looks as though it might have been a toy room that had been flooded at some point. Lastly, a small square hole in the wall which I assume is a crawl space. Scratching and thumping comes from the hole. I see a flashlight on the table and it is close enough for me to grab, so I grab it and flip the switch. I'm slightly surprised when it works. I walk with Fin closer to the hole and I shine the beam of light inside. It's a raccoon. It gets spooked at the sight of us and starts trying to escape. Fin grabs the back of my shirt and pulls me back slightly. The raccoon comes flying out of the crawl space and runs into the back room, onto a shelf and out a hole in one of the windows.
"Maybe we should cover that hole so the little buger won't be able to get back in, " Fin suggests.
"Sounds like a plan, " I reply before walking into the next room. As I look around I realize that the room is in fact an old playroom. Old toys are scattered all over the floor, but the room smelled mouldy and damp.
"Hey scarlet I found duck tape," Fin says from the other side of the room. He marches over with the tape in hand. I let Fin fix the hole well I look around more. There is a large train set in the corner, it looks like it's in good condition. I can't help thinking that Thomas would love to have a set like that. I stand there admiring it for a few moments.
"Ok let's go get Ruby and Thomas in here," Fin says as he starts to leave the room. I follow excited to get out of the damp basement.
