Chapter 8 (What happened to Mollie)

I walk down the hall to where the others are discussing plans.
"So are you coming with us," Fin asks Kilik.
"I don't know yet." Kilik answers.
"What are you guys talking about?" I ask.
"How to get the stuff from the car." Ruby answers.
"let's figure this out tomorrow, I'm starting to get tired. " Kilik says before walking down the hall to the kennels. I decide to follow hoping I can get to know this stranger a little more. Kilik stands looking into an empty cage.
"Are you ok?" I ask.
"There were more animals here when I first got here." He says. "They were sick and the vets just left them here to die. I tried my best but I didn't even know what was wrong with them. I lost a cat this morning."
I put my hand on his shoulder.
"It's not your fault Kilik," I say. Fin and Ruby enter the room and grab an arm full of blankets.
"Where will we be sleeping again?"Asks Ruby.
"You guys can take the surgery room at the other end of the hall. I'll be in the office room next to that if you need me." Kilik replies before heading down the hallway to the office room. I grab an arm full of what's left for blankets and follow Ruby and Fin down the hall to our room for the night. Ruby takes the spot in the corner, I place my bag against the wall and set my bed up next to the door, near Thomas. Fin sets himself up on the other side of the room next to one of the surgical tables.  I'll admit that the flor isn't a comfortable place to sleep but I'm just glad to be safe. I try my best to get comfortable but it's so hard that I just give up and let myself slowly fall asleep.

I hear a horrible noise coming from the room where Mollie was. I get up and run to check on her. Ruby rushes to my side with the gun just as I open the door. I see Mollie, but she has pale skin and looks lifeless. She rushes towards the door at me gnashing her teeth.
"Are you ok sweetie?" I ask. She doesn't reply and continues to come towards me. Before she has a chance to grab me, Ruby fires the gun killing the undead little girl. I run to her side hoping she would somehow be ok. I sit on the ground and hold her in my arms. Her eyes stare up at me blank and lifeless.
"No, come back. Wake up you can't be gone. Sweetheart please." I cry. Fin and Kilik run into the room and freeze when they see what had happened. Kilik tries to pull me away, but I didn't want to move. Fin looks at the lifeless little girl in my arms.
"She was bitten." I hear Fin say.
"Scarlet you have to move please," Kilik says now gently pulling on my arm.
"She's gone scarlet," Ruby says as she puts a hand on my shoulder.
"Don't touch me. Please just leave us alone." I sob. Ruby takes her hand away. Ruby leaves the room followed by Fin and Kilik.
"I'm so sorry Mollie, I couldn't protect you. I promised you we would find your parents. But how can I find them to tell them what happened when I don't know who I'm looking for." I sob. I close my eyes hoping to open them and wake up in my bed in my room wrapped in my blankets. Unfortunately, it isn't that easy. I open my eyes again to this horrible nightmare that is now my reality. This innocent little girl was gone and this was all too real. I sit there on the floor just clinging to Mollie for what feels like forever just trying to understand. The room is completely silent. I look at Mollie more closely, Her body is limp and her pant leg is rolled up to reveal a bite just above her ankle. Why didn't I check her, I should have taken more notice of her before.
"I'm so sorry Mollie." I cry. I pick her up and place her on top of one of the blankets and tuck her in with the other. Fin comes into the room to check on me.
"Are you okay Scarlet?" He asks. I don't answer instead I just hug him, I just really needed a hug. I cry into his shoulder and he hugs me back tightly.
"Listen we have to go now. " Fin says as he backs away from me. I look at Mollie one last time before leaving the room. I follow Fin down the hall to where Ruby and Kilik are talking. Thomas is clinging to Ruby and crying. He runs to me as we enter the room.
"Scar I'm scared." He cries.
"It's gonna be ok." I try to reassure him.
"Well, now we know getting bit will turn you crazy." Kilik starts.
"Their zombies!" Fin says.
"Fin this isn't a movie. It's just some kind of neurological disease or something," Kilik says.
"Let's get back to talking about how we're gonna get back to the car," I say.
"Well, we know noise attracts them. Why doesn't one of us set off a car alarm down the street to attract them that way, then we escape the other way towards the car" Ruby says.
"I bet we could even set off one out front and escape out the back," Kilik suggests. 
"Sounds like a plan, but we should grab whatever we can for supplies before just leaving," Fin says.
"I've got some space in my backpack," I say.
"Great let's fill that," Kilik says.
"I'll get it ?" I say before heading down the hall to the surgery room where I left it.
