I pick up my backpack, open it and pour it out to reveal its contents. A few random pieces of clothing, the picture of my family and Thomas' teddy bear. I pick up the picture of my family and look at how happy we all were. I remember that day so well, We had been at the beach and Thomas and I had been building this amazing sandcastle when mom called us for a picture. It was such a fun day and we were all smiling. I Look down at my dad's ring which is still on the chain around my neck. I hope my parents are ok. I want to cry so badly, I want to just scream and cry right now but I have to keep myself together. Hopefully, I will have time to mourn later but right now I need to focus. As I look at the ring I realize how disgustingly dirty I am. I'm covered in blood and dirt from head to toe. I remove my pants and grab a clean pare slipping them on quickly. Then I remove my dirty top and grab a clean black T-shirt. As I'm about to put it on I hear a noise behind me. I turn around to see Fin in the doorway. He immediately averts his eyes and I instinctively covered my self. I felt extremely embarrassed.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't realize you would be changing. I just wanted to make sure you were ok because you were taking a while," Fin says. He is obviously embarrassed too. I pull the shirt on as Fin continues to look away.
"You're safe to look now," I say.
"I didn't see anything I promise," He says. I turn around to gather my things and smile a little as I do so.
I put everything back in the bag except the clothes I figure we'll find more later and right now they take up too much space. Fin and I walk back to where the others are waiting.
"Let's get that backpack filled. Do you guys have food in your vehicle already?" Kilik asks.
"We have a bit ya," Ruby replies.
"how about pet food? We're not going to leave Zeina and that kitten here to die." Kilik says.
"No we don't have pet food," I reply.
"The clinic has lots, we'll take as much as we can shove in that bag of yours. Come on I'll show you where the food is." Kilik says before leaving the room. I follow him to a shelf in the front lobby.
"let's do this quick, I want to get out of here as soon as possible," Kilik says as he starts handing me cans of cat food. I fit about 4 at the bottom of the bag. He hands me a small bag of dry dog food, which takes up the remaining space in the bag. I slip the bag over my shoulders and find it is super heavy. Kilik and I then go back to the others, who are discussing who will set off the alarm out front.
"I'll do it," Kilik says as we get closer.
"You can't, you have no idea where the car is if we get separated," Ruby replies.
"I'll do it," Fin says. "I'll feel much more comfortable knowing that you are all safe. I remember where the car is so I'm sure I will be ok."
"You better be careful." Ruby hands Fin the gun.
"I just have to grab one last thing before getting Zeina ready," Kilik says before disappearing into one of the other rooms. Kilik emerges with a red bag which looks like it could be a first aid kit.
"Ok let's do this," Kilik says.
"Alright when you hear the alarm, start running. I'll be right behind you." Fin says. And with that, he heads to the front exit. Thomas grabs my hand and we all go to the kennel room. I grab the kitten out of its cage and Kilik puts Zaina on a leash. Kilik offers Thomas a piggyback ride and he happily excepts. We wait at the door for the sound of the car alarm. After a few minutes, we hear it. Ruby opens the door and we start running towards the car. The kitten scratches me and kicks its way out of my grasp. It runs back inside the building.
"We can't go back for it," Ruby say. I look at the open door as we run and don't see any sine of Fin or the kitten. I hear a gunshot ring out and my heart starts racing faster. We keep running as fast as we can. We get to the car safely. We all get it and wait for Fin. I feel extremely nervous and I start biting the corner of my lip. He was taking longer than I had hoped.
