A flashlight shines in our faces making us squint from the brightness. I hear growling. The little girl, who was still in my arms, hugs me tightly.
"Who the hell are you people?" Asks a strange voice. The light lowers and my eyes begin to adjust. I see a young man who I guess is maybe around 23 years old or so. His long hair is pulled back in a man bun. He has a large Bernese Mountain Dog on a leash, its growling and baring its teeth at us.
"We're just looking for a place to hide. Were sorry to have barged in. We have children with us, please don't hurt us." Ruby says softly. The man pulls on the dog's leash. The dog instantly sits and starts wagging its tail.
"Come with me." The man says as he walks towards a door. We follow behind him. The door leads to a dimly lit hallway. As I look around I notice that we're in some kind of hospital or vet clinic.
The little girl starts to feel warm against my shoulder.
"I'm Kilik, who are you people?" the stranger says.
"Ruby" answers Ruby as she extends her hand to shake Kilik's.
"I'm Fin and this here is Thomas," Fin says gesturing to Thomas.
"Scarlet," I answer. Kilik looks at the little girl and she looks up at me. I give her a reassuring smile.
"Mollie," she whispers as she tucks a stray piece of her short blond hair behind her ear.
"That's a beautiful name," Kilik says with a smile.
"What's the dog's name?" Asks Thomas.
"This is Zeina. Oh, and I have someone else to show you." Kilik answers.
"someone else?" Ruby questions. Kilik nods and gestures for us to follow him. We follow him down the hall to a door. He opens it and goes inside. As I step in I see that it's a kennel room with a lot of empty cages. We walk to the end of the room and Kilik opens one of the cages and pulls out a kitten about the size of his hand. I put Mollie down so she can see. The little girl's face lights up with joy when she sees it. Kilik holds the kitten out toward her and she immediately reaches out to pet it. Kilik smiles and hands the little ball of fluff over to Mollie to hold.
"Did you work here or something?" I ask.
"Ya, I was the kennel helper. When all this went down everyone in town evacuated. But I just couldn't. I could never leave the animals knowing that they wouldn't make it so I've been taking care of them." He replies. My arm begins to hurt and I grab it in an effort to stop the pain.
"Are you okay?" Kilik asks.
"It's her arm, she cut it off something when all this happened. We think it's getting infected." Fin says.
"Let me take a look at it," Kilik says. Kilik turns on the flashlight. I remove the bandage from around my arm to reveal my cut, which is not as bad as I expected. I see that it has weird tiny green lines coming from the cut, they're barely noticeable.
"Let's get it cleaned up and redressed," Kilik says calmly. We walk back into the hallway where Kilik grabs peroxide and gauze wrap. He pores some of the peroxide onto a piece of paper towel.
"This is going to hurt like hell. " Kilik says before putting the paper towel to my arm. I gasp in pain and bight my lip to keep myself from screaming, knowing it would attract the creatures. Kilik wraps my arm with gauze wrap and walks into another room. He comes out with a small bottle of pills.
"Here take one of these, they'll help with the pain," Kilik says as he hands me the pills. I take one of the pills and follow Kilik back into the kennel room. Kilik takes the kitten and places it back in its cage.
"I don't feel so good. " Mollie whispers.
"Well let's set up a place for you to take a nap, ok. " Kilik says with a smile. He grabs some blankets from a shelf and takes Mollie's hand. I follow as Kilik takes Mollie down the hall to one of the other rooms that must've been an exam room before all this. Kilik lays the blanket on the floor and tries to make the makeshift bed as comfortable as possible. Kilik leaves the room and Mollie curls up in the blankets. I sit next to Her on the floor.
"Where are your parents sweetie?" I ask.
"A man chased them away." She says with tears in her eyes.
"I promise we'll help you find them first thing tomorrow," I say. She hugs me tightly. Her skin feels like fire.
"I think you should get some sleep honey," I say.
"Please stay until I fall asleep, I'm scared of the dark," Mollie whispers. I smile down at her.
"Can you sing? " she asks.
"Not very well. " I reply honestly.
"Will you sing me a lullaby, please?" she says in such an innocent tone. I start to sing her the lullaby my mom used to sing to me.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine....." Soon Mollie is fast asleep. so I carefully sneak out of the room. I walk down the hall to where I hear the others. Everyone is standing around an Examination table with bowls of food.
"Hungry? " asks Kilik as I get closer. I nod yes, my stomach growling at the thought of food. Kilik hands me a bowl of baked beans. They aren't hot but honestly, I don't care. I shovel the beans into my mouth finishing them quickly.
"Wow, I didn't realize how hungry I was," I say with a giggle as I hand the bowl back to Kilik.
"Well, you were passed out for most of the day that's enough to make anyone hungry," Ruby says with a laugh. Fin hands me a water bottle and I drank it.
"I'm sleepy," Thomas says with a yawn.
"You guys can sleep in the room at the end of the hall," Kilik says.
I take Thomas's hand and go to the kennel room to get blankets. All the blankets smell a little little dog. I take him to the room and set up a makeshift bed on one side of the room and let him climb in. I tuck him in, move the hair away from his face and kiss his forehead. Thomas smiles up at me and whispers "good night". I smile and whisper back "goodnight ". After that, I slip out of the room and carefully shut the door behind me.
