Chapter 10: POOR ALIYA

Bad as I like ye, it’s worse without ye. ~Irish Proverb

KAVYA’S POV:

Today was my scheduled meet with Aliya. I hadn’t seen much of her in the last couple of months. She had a variety of family functions going on and had been busy. All her family commitments were over now and we decided to catch up. It was a Saturday and we were to meet up after she got off from work. Unlike me she didn’t get Saturdays off. I picked her up from her office at 4.

It was good to see her after such a long time. She filled me up on all the fun she had had. She looked relaxed, though there was something going on with her. As we were reaching my house, she wanted to say something but she hesitated. She wasn’t coming around. I didn’t push her. She took her time but she ended up telling me anyways. We kept updating each other on the other events in our life. I ordered a pizza. Tonight was a DVD and pizza night. We were going to watch Harry met Sally. It was our personal favourite.

As I started the movie I realised that Aliya had spaced out. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I said, “What is up? There is something you are not telling me.”

She looked at me and smiled a little. Was she blushing? I couldn’t make out.

She cleared her throat and said,” I met somebody last week at the wedding.”

And now she was blushing. “Oooo,” I said. “Tell me all about him,” I added.

“Well, his name is Rohan and he was there in the wedding last week. He was from the groom’s side. The bride introduced me to him. You know me, right? Initially I was just simply flirting with him like I always do. And then I don’t know but a few days later they arrive at our house and I find out our parents are longtime friends and they were staying at our place. I spent the whole of last week with him. We went for dinner. We went to the movies. We went for walks.”

She stopped for a while before continuing, ”He is so nice. And not to mention so gorgeous. He and I have so much in common. Those were some of the best five days of my life. And our parents were completely oblivious.” She grinned as if to herself and put her head back on the couch.

She looked so happy. She had dated quite a few times before but never had I seen her like this.

“So what happened next?” I asked.

“Nothing,” she said.

“Nothing?” I questioned.

She sighed and said, “I think he wanted to ask me out but never got the chance or maybe he thought we just were good friends. I don’t know what to say but it’s been a couple of days and there’s no sign of him.”

“He lives here, in Mumbai?” I asked.

“Yes, he’s been in this city since his childhood. He was the groom’s friend.”

I didn’t know what to say next so I just kept quiet.

After a couple of minutes she looked at me and said, “Don’t feel bad Kavu bear. Everything doesn’t have to work out for the best.” Now I knew she wasn’t all happy inside. She never called me Kavu or bear for that matter. I just squeezed her hand, silently cursing the guy for leading my friend on.

She wasn’t very emotional. She never let out what she really felt. It had taken her more than a year to let me in. She had fun all the time but behind all that façade was a girl who just wanted to be found out by the guy of her dreams.

I got up suddenly and said,” Alu Bhalu, wait here. I’ll be back in 5.” She was confused now firstly because I had called her Alu Bhalu. I know it wasn’t very original but if she’s calling me bear I can call her Bhalu. And secondly, because I was acting all hyper. I took my purse and left.

I was back in 5 with a tub of Baskin & Robbins chocolate fudge. She just gave me a grateful smile.

I sat on the couch with her and said, “Never say that again. Everything always always works out for the best.”

I put on the movie and we watched it while digging into the lip-smacking ice-cream. After the movie was done, we kept on chatting till the wee hours. We spoke about all the topics under the roof. At 4 in the morning, we finally slept.
