Chapter 22 : AND THEN HE LEFT ME

KAVYA’S POV:

7 days had passed since Ahaan had told me about him leaving for the UK. He called every day. He called every hour. Vidhi was answering my calls at home. I still didn’t know what to say. He was leaving me. Nothing mattered anymore. He tried coming to meet me but Vidhi had strictly forbidden him from the house. I was a complete mess with the continuous crying. If I was alone, I was so lost in my world I hardly realised if time was passing by.

Today Vidhi had to go out. So Aliya was babysitting me. Vidhi left at about 7 and Aliya was arriving in an hour. I sat on the couch staring at the ceiling. I was thinking of all the good times with Ahaan. Even thinking about him got tears in my eyes. Just then I heard a knock on the door. Wiping my tears and wondering how Aliya made it so early, I opened the door. It was Ahaan. He looked like he was a mess too. Not any different than me.

He said, “Please just listen to me.” I nodded and didn’t ask him to come in.

“The whole night before you came to know, I was thinking of n number of possibilities of keeping you with me. And I wanted you to marry me so that we could stay together and everything would work out.”

“So why didn’t you?” I asked before he could finish. He looked shocked. He was speechless. I asked him once again as if he hadn’t heard me before, “Why didn’t you?”

“Because you said you weren’t ready for marriage and you said that it was too early,” he replied.

“That was said when we would be staying in the same city, let alone the same continent. Why couldn’t you just tell me you were leaving?” I asked dejectedly.

“Like I said I forgot, “he replied.

“How can you forget such an important thing?” I asked angrily.

“I was with you all the time and it just made me forget about the whole going back business,” he replied.

“And now it’s my entire fault that you never told me?” I was very angry.

“I am not saying it’s your fault, “he said impatiently.

“You know what? Just leave. If you really were finding possibilities, you would have asked me that day.”

“So marry me then,” he bluntly said.

“Marry you? Why? Just because there’s no option left? Just because now suddenly you realise you can’t live without me?” I asked bitterly.

He looked at me and didn’t say anything. I wanted him to give me reasons for why he wanted to marry me. He was just standing there not saying anything.

“Because I need you,” he managed to reply.

“That’s not good enough a reason,” I replied.

“Why are you putting us both in this situation? You know you want me and I want you as much. You’re still saying no. You are giving up,” he said with slight irritation.

“I am not giving up. I am not saying no because I need you and I want to be difficult. I am saying no because I know you don’t need me as much as I need you. And if you really would have cared, you would have asked me because you wanted to marry me. Not because you had no options left,” I replied crying.

Before he could say anything else, I saw Aliya enter.

She looked at Ahaan with anger and asked, “What is he doing here? Why did you let him come in?”

Ahaan replied to Aliya while looking at me, “I was here to make a last attempt to get her back. But she doesn’t want to be with me. You too live a great life, Kavya Bhagwat.”

He looked at me a final time and with that he stormed out of the apartment. I looked at his disappearing figure with my mouth open. Why was he jerking me around? It was his entire fault. I felt like running behind him and yelling at him.

And I didn’t want to be with him? Who was he kidding? The only thing I could think every minute of the day is how I could find a way to be with him even with this mess. And he has the bloody guts to tell me to have a good life. He was the good in my good life. The jerk! He never cared. Finding myself flinch, I fell on the couch and as tradition those tears followed suit.

Aliya held me and kept rubbing her hand on my back to get me to stop crying. And after what seemed like ages I finally fell asleep.
