Chapter 25: THIS TIME AROUND
It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.
KAVYA’S POV:
The wedding day had arrived and guests were filling in the wedding hall. I was helping Aliya get dressed. In her family, the marriages started in the evening (while in my family they started in the morning). I hadn’t had the time to see anything else as I was really busy. The whole wedding had been a blast. I actually had tears in my eyes when they finally took their parents blessings. After the whole ceremony was done, I went back to the room to get everything packed up so Aliya could leave immediately for her honeymoon. She rushed in a while later, took her bag, kissed me on the cheek, gave me that same annoying smile and said, “I’ll call you soon.”
I wished her a happy journey and left to find my parents. They were going to stay much longer and asked me to leave. I took the car keys and left the hall. As I was walking to the car, I realised that somebody was standing behind me. I was freaked and I turned around slowly. And then I felt nothing. The unmentionable- the nerve breaker- the heart-breaker - the jerk was standing in front of me.
As soon as he saw me turn, he went on his knees and removed a ring out of his pocket. It was a very beautiful ring. It was a round cut solitaire diamond. It looked very expensive but very exquisite.
“Will you marry me?” he asked.
Not waiting for my answer he stood up and continued,” I was a jerk that day. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. And I should have told you sooner. The whole last month was third degree torture. There wasn’t a second when I wasn’t thinking about you. And you want reasons why I want to marry you right? To start with, I love you. I love the way you keep finding reasons to fight with me. I love to tease you about the fact that you will always owe me that hug. I love how you smile. I love how you just snuggle up to me when nothing seems to be going your way. I love how you love teasing me. I love it when you call me a jealous pig. I love how protective you are of me. I love how you get along with my sister. I love the way you giggle. I love the way you look in my sweatshirts. I love how you kiss me. I love how you suddenly get shy when you are talking about something personal.”
He said all of the above pretty much without taking a breath. Nothing mattered anymore now that he was here. As he kept rambling on about why he wanted to marry me, I had slowly started walking to him. He was so busy professing his love for me that, he didn’t even notice me approach him till I was an inch close to him.
Before he could say anything more I hugged him. I had missed him to a very high degree. He hugged me back tight. He continued on,” I love every inch of you. And I can’t miss you anymore. I want to marry you for all the above reasons. I’ll die if I have to spend another minute without you in my life.”
I couldn’t let go of him. Not now. Not ever.
After a while, letting go of him partially, I asked, “Did Aliya and Siddharth know you were coming?”
“Yeah, she invited me to the wedding and I asked them not to say a word to you,” he answered sheepishly. No wonder both of them were smiling, I thought to myself.
“So you were in there all evening?” I asked.
“Yeah I was.” He replied.
“Why did you keep me waiting all this while?” I asked a bit irritated.
He looked apologetically at me and said, “Sorry.”
I wanted to glare at him. But right now, different kinds of emotions were capitalizing. He was here. He was here for me. He was here to make it all right.
I kept looking at him. He was silent now. I was centimeters away from him. I leaned in. Before I even started, his lips were on mine. He kissed me with utmost passion. He held me with both his arms. And he didn’t let go of me. I had missed him. I had missed the feel of him. His touch. His kisses.
“Don’t leave me again and never keep me waiting,” I said.
“Never,” he whispered loud enough for me to hear him.
“And yes, I will marry you. I would have married you for zero reasons too, “I said.
He chuckled and said,” Man I wasted time thinking of so many.” I punched him in the arm feigning irritation. He laughed even more. He put the ring on my finger and hugged me.
I didn’t let go of him that day. That entire night I was with him. I was scared. I kept thinking that I was dreaming. The whole of last month had been hard. It was hard to believe that he was here in flesh. Finally in the morning, he dropped me back home. We were to leave back for Mumbai a day later.
Aliya and Siddharth had called up the following day and teased me. I playfully scolded them for keeping me in the dark. Siddharth and Sailee had left right after the wedding. Aliya and Rohan were enjoying in Mauritius. Ahaan and I had told our parents. They were glad that things had finally worked out.
As we were leaving the next day, I realised we were on the same journey we had been on when it had all started, when we had left the first time with Rahul, Siddharth, Ahaan, Aliya and I.
Ahaan was driving this time and I was shotgun.
This time around I didn’t hate him
This time around it was only the two of us.
This time around I wasn’t letting go of him so easily.
This time around I didn’t just owe him a hug; I owed him a lifetime of love.
This time around I was engaged and in love with my personal Greek God.
