Chapter 5 - Asking Her Out

Chapter 5: ASKING HER OUT

 People say, what’s the point in liking someone who doesn’t like you back. They are right, there is no point. But you can’t help who you like; it’s not up to you. Your heart kind of just decided for you and there is no turning back once your heart makes up its mind.

 KAVYA’S POV:

It had been a couple of weeks now since the concert. Ahaan and I resorted to continuous messaging. I guess we were friends now. One such Sunday, while we were messaging I left for the market to buy my weekly groceries, he asked me where I was,

Shopping. Groceries. I replied.

A while later, a tap on my shoulder made me jump with fright. I turned around to see Ahaan laughing. I punched him in the shoulder.

“You freak, you scared me. Idiot.”

After his laughter subsided, “Sorry I didn’t mean to.”

“Anyways why are you following me?” I asked composing myself.

“Funny,” he replied, “I should be asking you the same question.”

“You think I’m stalking you?” I asked. “What if I am?” I added with a smile and a wink.

He acted like he was fainting, and said, “I wish.” I just rolled my eyes and proceeded to the cash counter. After we both were done, he invited me for lunch.

We kept our groceries in his car and he said he would take me to this nearby restaurant for lunch. As we approached I realised that the place he was taking me to was really classy. The date-kind. I just stared at him. He just chuckled and led me in.

“What are you doing?” I asked him as we sat at the table.

“Having lunch.” He replied.

“Is this a date?” I asked. “If you want it to be.”

He replied with a small smile. God he was frustrating me. He wasn’t giving me a single straight answer. I just ordered what I wanted. Ate it quietly and went Dutch on the bill. As soon as we were done, I stormed out of the place towards his car.

“Hey wait for me too!” he yelled from behind me. I was really irritated with him for just acting the way he did. He soon caught up with me and then pulled me by my hand to face him.

“What just happened? Why did you storm out?”

I just looked at him and half-shouted, “You happened. What was all this? And now you like me? And if you do, you just take me out on a date without prior notice? And you never give me any answers. Why do you have to answer in riddles?”

He let me finish and still kept looking at me.

“What?” I shouted.

He replied,”Ok. Ok. I’ll answer all your questions. First, I am not stalking I’m just hanging nearby. You may call it stalking but I like you and if that’s the only way I can stay around well so be it. Second, I wanted to take you for lunch since days but thought you would say no and so resorted to taking you out today. Sorry I didn’t tell you beforehand. And no it wasn’t a date. The dates Ahaan takes girls out on are 10 times better and I promise you will have the time of your life. And yes, I like you. Why is that so hard to believe? And fifth, I’ll try answering completely from now on.”

He likes me, I thought to myself. I wanted to squeal out loud but controlled myself.

“Girls?” I asked half smiling.

He smiled sheepishly and said, “I say all that and she catches on only one word. Did you just hear me say I like you?”

I just blushed and looked away. He continued, “Now I have something to say. For somebody who wants all the answers I have two complaints.”

I rose my eyebrow smiling and said, “Shoot.”

“First, you still haven’t told me what I did for you to hate me so much? And second, you still owe me a hug.”

God this guy was never going to give up. I finally decided to answer him. “Well, you were cocky, arrogant and too casual back in college and I didn’t like you much. The way you spoke to me the day of our re-union, you gave me the same indication and so I said what I said. And I have to say that I misjudged you. I guess you have changed.” He didn’t say anything and had a blank expression.

“Hey, I am sorry if I offended you.” I added.

“It is ok.” He replied with this small smile which looked a bit fake. We sat in the car and I realised there was uncomfortable silence. He looked so serious, I just felt like cursing myself. As we reached home, I invited him over for coffee. Surprisingly, he accepted.

After I made coffee for him, I went and sat with him in the hall.

He just looked at me questioningly, “Where’s your cup?”

“I hate coffee.” I said.

“Seriously?” he asked with a smile. This seemed to amuse him.

“I know. I know. I am the only idiot who doesn’t like coffee. Go on make fun of me,” I said as he kept looking at me with amusement.

“So you get that a lot, huh?” he asked.

“Yup,” I replied.

Keeping his cup down he said, “I too am not that great a fan of coffee. I thought you liked it so said yes. Then he picked his cup up and started drinking it.

“You know you don’t have to drink it, right?” I asked. He just shrugged and kept drinking it.

“Crazy! So what happened to you back there? I am really sorry I offended you. And don’t say it is okay because I know it isn’t. Your eyes tell me something’s wrong.”

He kept his cup down and looked at me with his brown eyes. “I am not offended. I know what I was back then. There’s no point hiding that. But I can assure you I have changed. And you just brought back some old memories and so I acted the way I did.” He got up to leave after saying that.

As he was close to the door I caught him by his wrist and he turned around to look at me. We were real close when I whispered, “Was all of that, you asking me out in the form of your riddles?”

He leaned in so that our foreheads touched each others. “Is this you saying yes?” he asked.

I groaned and said, “Again you answer with a question.” He just chuckled and said, “Yes, that was me asking you out Kavya. Will you go out with me?” I laughed.

He always seemed to have that effect on me. I hugged him and said yes to his chest. He kissed my hair. And then he left.

He was halfway down when I yelled out, “By the way I don’t owe you anything anymore.”

He laughed out loud and said, “We’ll see.”

I rolled my eyes as I entered my apartment with a wide grin.
