Tom's POV
"Are you going to answer that?" Julia asked staring at me."I don't think I can. I'm too afraid of the results." I said, the phone still vibrating in my pocket. "I think it's the interview results."
"Oh,Tom. How bad can it be? Want me to answer it for you?" I didn't say anything,so she rolled her green eyes before taking my phone out of my pocket. "Tom's phone. Who may it be? Oh,mmm."
There were a lot of "mmm's". I could only watch Julia talk with the headmistress of the school I could be possibly teaching at. After about 4 minutes, she finally ended the call with, "Yes,I'll be sure to tell him. Thank you, have a nice day."
"What was it?" She handed me the phone.
"I'll tell you only if you promise not to cry if it turns out bad."
"I won't cry,Julia. I'll only be disappointed."
"You don't have to be disappointed, because you got the job. The lady said you gave a 'marvelous first impression'." She perfected a British accent to sound like the headmistress.
"You're not joking?" I eyed her, crossing my arms.
"I don't lie,Tom Watson." She said the same words that she had told me yesterday.
"I believe you. When do I start?" I said with a huge smile, clearly excited for my new job.
"She didn't say. It wouldn't hurt to call her back, you know."
She's right. This is extremely embarrassing. Why the hell did I chicken out to answer my own phone? I should not have let her answer it for me. That move didn't really show how confident I am. I was just scared. Yes,men can get scared too for your information. I thanked Julia for taking the call for me. I know, not very manly. Okay, time to change the subject.
We were now strolling by one of St James' Park's lakes. Julia crouched down and to my surprise, she bent down a little bit further to pet a duck. I stood behind her, cautious, ready to catch her as she might fall into the lake.
Hands in the pockets of my trousers,I said, "You like ducks?"
"Technically, it's waterfowls. And yes,I find them cute." She said petting another waterfowl (a species I didn't knew even existed until she mentioned its name)
All I could think of was ducks. But she gave me a specific answer. Julia Sanderson is officially amazing. Why the hell is it called a waterfowl? Geez, it sounds really scientific. Julia waddled back and forth slightly, about to fall into the water before I grabbed her shoulders. "Careful there, you were close to falling in."
"Thanks." She said red-faced. Clearly embarrassed. It's okay,we've all had our embarrassing moments. Me as well,a few moments ago as you can tell. She took my outstretched hand and I pulled her up as she smoothed out her clothes. "Let's go somewhere else before I actually have an embarrassing fall."
And that was what we did. We ended up going for lunch and stayed at the café for quite a long time. Talking, telling things about each other. She didn't tell me much about her. She was really the one who threw a grenade of questions at me. And I answered truthfully of course.
Time laspe. It was now close to twilight. And we were standing on her front porch. We had went back to the coffee shop and took my car since she had hitched a ride with Marie.
"I'll see you...whenever." She said with an awkward smile and went in for a hug. A somewhat friendly hug. I don't know. I can't tell. God,this is driving me mad.
"Okay." I said into her hair. She pulled away and started walking up the steps to her door so I turned around and started walking to my car,the keys swishing around in my hands when she called out, "Hey,Tom." I swirled around, half glad that she could possibly want to go out again and half afraid that she doesn't.
"You know,it was only suppose to be just coffee." She said, going inside but smiled as she shut the door. I beamed, getting into my car. What she said was true. Absolutely true. I guess I didn't like plan A after all, having just the morning with her.
Busted.
