Annabeth thought that she had found her soulmate when she met Luke Castellan. The tattoo that was on her back was of a bronze knife and Luke's was an owl. He'd shown her his tattoo - which was positioned just behind his ear - when they had met. And of course, Annabeth had fallen in love.
When you turned thirteen, the start of a tattoo would appear on you. It could be in any place, and after a few years it could change and evolve to the person's interests and hobbies/personality
Annabeth had seen multiple tattoos. There was a bolt of lightning crossed with a pair of glasses on Piper's back, a maple leaf on Hazel's thigh, and the roots of a tree crawled up Grover's arm.
Of course, you could also not have a tattoo. Thalia didn't have one, and neither did Leo and Reyna. But, the tattoos mightn't appear until you decide to change yourself. When Nico began to be more open and happy, a sunshine appeared on the back of his neck. A few days later, he met Will.
Annabeth and Luke had been happy together for a few months. Then, one day, that all changed.
Luke had begun to grow cold and Annabeth was suspecting that something was up. One day at the beach, she saw what was wrong.
Wrapped around Luke's ankle was a lightning bolt and a spear. The owl that symbolised Annabeth was still behind his ear, but Annabeth quickly realised what the lightning bolt and spear were.
Soulmate tattoos usually appeared vibrant and almost life-like. They're easy to distinguish from regular tattoos if you see them both at the same time. And now, Annabeth had realised that Luke was a liar.
She stormed up to him and slapped him across the face. "You liar!" She cried, tears prickling in her eyes. "I can't believe I thought you were my soulmate!"
Luke looked shocked. He glanced down at his ankle and said, "babe, it's not what it looks like."
"You tricked me!" Annabeth yelled. "You're such a jerk!" And with that, she turned on her heel and stormed off down the beach. As she walked, she felt a tingling feeling run on her spine. Confused, she tried to look at her back but couldn't.
Annabeth stopped walking and dialled Piper's number on her phone. "Hello?" Piper asked.
"Pipes, get down here right now. You will not believe what's happened -"
"Annie, chill out for a moment. Take a deep breath. Now look behind you."
Annabeth slowly turned to see Piper, Hazel and Thalia waving at her from their towels. With a big grin on her face, Annabeth jogged over.
"We saw what happened." Hazel explained.
"Can I go break his skull?" Thalia snarled, cracking her knuckles and glaring at Luke in the distance.
Annabeth laid down her towel and sat on it. "I think I felt my tattoo change." She said excitedly.
"Really?" Piper gasped. "Quick! Let me see!"
Annabeth pulled off her shirt so that she was in her bikini. Piper leaned over and examined it and nodded. "Yup, it's definitely changed."
"Can you take a picture of it?" Annabeth asked.
Piper grabbed her phone and took the photo. When she showed it to Annabeth, she stifled a gasp. The knife had changed to a sea green trident. Surrounding it were images of fish, skateboards and miniature swords.
"Whoa, it's beautiful." Hazel said as she looked at the photo.
"Well, I don't know about you, but I'm going swimming!" Thalia cried, already in her swimsuit. Annabeth stood up as well, pulling off her shorts so that she was ready to go.
The two girls sprinted towards the water, and dived in. Immediately, Annabeth felt the coldness. She shivered, putting her head under. Then she began to swim towards where Thalia was.
But the water didn't want her to go. It shoved her away, pulling her under and sending water up her nostrils. Annabeth cried out, but water entered her mouth. She stuck her arms up in the air as she was pulled further out to sea, her head still under.
This is a bad way to die, Annabeth thought to herself sadly, as she stopped struggling and let the water carry her away. Her lungs gasped for air but she couldn't bring herself to swim up. She drifted in and out of consciousness, her vision beginning to go back. When she was sure that she was going to die, she felt a hand clamp around her wrist.
Annabeth's eyes snapped open. She was lying in the sand, panting, staring up at the brilliant blue sky above her. "Hey, are you okay?" Asked the boy leaning over her. Annabeth could only stare at him.
His wet black hair was dripping all over her, sea green eyes gazing in concern down at her. He had a tanned body and was built like a swimmer. But the thing which made Annabeth stop and stare was the owl tattoo on his shoulder. As she looked, it began expanding. A book, a laptop and a grey knife appeared, the owl's glaring grey eyes cutting into hers.
"I - uh," Annabeth started coughing, and the boy helped her sit up.
As he did, he stared at the tattoo on Annabeth's back in shock. Annabeth stopped coughing and looked at him. Eyes locked, they stared at each other for at least a minute before he managed to stumble out, "what's your name?"
"Annabeth." Annabeth breathed. "Annabeth Chase."
"I'm Percy." The boy said, his gaze never wavering. "Percy Jackson. And I think I'm your soulmate."
