CLOVER

Clover released a nervous breath, tucking a strand of her dark brown hair behind her ears as she slipped into the hover, crossing her legs. The hover rumbled to life and sped away smoothly, and Clover leaned her head back, her eyes catching a last glimpse of the magnificent New Beijing palace before it vanished completely from view.

Mistress would not be pleased.

I've tried, Clover tried to convince herself. I tried to make him trust me. And Mistress told me to say those things to him, so basically, it's also her fault. Clover wringed her hands together as she gave the hover driver a slip of address.

"To the Old South New Beijing harbors?" The driver asked, looking perplexed as he glanced at her in the review mirror. "are you sure, madam? The place is under maintenance."

Clover frowned. "Yes, I'm sure. Just go there." she muttered and sank backwards.

The driver shrugged and turned away, flicking up the control systems as they took a large right.

Clover was once engaged in her own turmoil of thoughts.

Then something buzzed in her pocket. Clover held up her tablet, quickly entering her inbox. Sure enough, there was a message from her Mistress, blinking red in the hotline. Clover tapped on the icon to read.

DID YOU PLANT LISTENING DEVICES AND TAKE THE FOLDER?

Clover bit her lip, typing back a quick response. YES, MISTRESS. I HAVE ALSO ATTAINED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT WILL PLEASE YOU.

I LOOK FORWARD TO OUR RENDEZVOUS THEN, DARLING CLOVER.

Clover gritted her teeth and tried to calm the hot boiling anger threatening to energize her glamour. Clover knew, like all other Lunars, when you were angry or frustrated, the glamour took over your own body without consent sometimes. She sucked in a breath, the illusion of the knife that had suddenly appeared in her hands disappearing. She could not afford anyone to know.

Kai, she recalled, last night was close. Too close to figuring it out.

And Mistress had decreed this remain a secret.

Because if he found out the true intentions behind her 'fangirl' story, then Mistress would have ordered her to...take charge a little bit. Maybe play with his head for a while, jumbling things up. Clover had pulled on his bioelectricity subtly, because if Kai was as suspicious as he led to her believe-the Emperor was not stupid-it would have been a huge risk.

Clover had been informed the Commonwealth Emperor knew what it felt like to be manipulated by a Lunar, according to Levana's boasts. Mistress had confirmed Kai was not to be easily fooled, so it took a very controlled Lunar to manipulate someone without them suspecting at all.

Clover played with a strand of her hair, then realizing she had kept up her glamour for too long, she let it fall. The nose, the curve of her cheekbones, the bright tan glow to her skin, all fell away. The little, subtle facial features that had made her look so much like Cinder faded away.
