-Chapter 4

Rose's POV

***

Chips for dinner again. Not bad. Simple life on a budget.

We take our second portion of chips of the day and our free hands find each other's and tangle together as if it's the most normal thing in the world. I was expecting to eat in the cafe, but the Doctor has other ideas. Pulling me out the warmth of the chip shop, he leads me outside into the chilly air.

"What are we doing?" I ask him curiously. He smiles.

"Taking a stroll."

I smile lightly and he squeezes my hand, leading me along the dark pavement to the beach. He leads me over and we both take a seat on a bench overlooking the ocean. It really is a beautiful sight before us. The fruit punch colours of the sunset seem to be clawing their way through the dark silhouettes of the town's buildings. People come and go behind us in the pavement, taking quiet strolls or walking dogs, and some cycling or driving along. A few couples walk on the beach together, hand in hand through the shallow waters. I smile and take a bite of a chip. It's so warm compared to the icy air around us. Its quite cold even for October. We part hands so we can hold onto the warm bags of chips, de-frosting our icy fingers. There's a few minutes silence where we both take in the quiet of the town, the faded noises coming from the town centre, and the beautiful sunset before us, before the Doctor speaks up.

"Do you think this is going to work?" He asks.

"What? The whole 6-months thing?" I reply, looking I get at him. He's staring out at the ocean, the sparkling water reflecting in his shining brown eyes.

"Yeah. Do you think we can do it?"

"I don't see why not. It's only six months, right?" I say reassuringly, not amazing to be the only one with hope.

"Right." He nods and swallows. I sense his nerves so take his hand.

"I'm sorry this happened, I know It's not really your scene, going all domestic." I say.

"It's not your fault. And besides, maybe this will be an educational six months where I can understand more about the planet and humans." He says, I laugh.

"Of course you'd see it like that."

"So how do you see it?" He asks curiously. A way to get closer to you. A way to go domestic for a short while. A way to see you dressed in mundane clothes and performing mundane tasks. A way for us to...I stop my thoughts abruptly.

"Umm...uhh...A chance to see you be like a human, I guess." I say.

"Do you not like my Timelord ways?" He asks curiously, glancing sidelong at me.

"Of course I do, I'd never change you." I squeeze his hand "It'll just be interesting, that's all."

"So we choose the house tomorrow." He says after a few moments silence.

"With what money though?" I ask.

"I may have a made a stop at the cashpoint, perfectly un harmful. Don't worry about it." He says, I sigh but know it was our only choice.

"Okay then. I'm sort of excited actually." I say, popping another chip into my mouth.

"Yeah?" He smiles.

"Yes." I say, and I'm about to lean into him for warmth when he jumps up.

"So back to the hotel?" He says, offering his hand. I take it and he pulls me up.

"Good idea." I say, although he thought of me leaning against his shoulder in the chilly sunset plays on my mind the whole way back to the hotel.
