*Warning!! This chapter is sad*
It all seems to happen so fast.
I got a call from a crying Marley. I tried, desperately, to calm her down so she could tell me why she was so upset.
"M-Marcia." she cried. "I-It's Finn!"
"What about him?" I asked.
"H-He's-" she let out another sob. "dead."
I sat, my mouth hanging open, in pure shock. My cell phone fell from my grasp and landed with a loud *bang* on the floor, causing the screen to crack. But I didn't care.
After a while, tears started streaking down my face as I dipped down to pick up the phone again. I dialed Ryder's number and waited, patiently, for him to answer. Finally, he did.
"Hello?" he said.
"Have you heard?" I asked, my voice barley a whisper.
"About Finn?" he replied. "Yeah. Blaine sent me a text."
"H-How? How did he die?" I asked.
"I don't know, Marcia. I honestly don't. I wish I did."
"This isn't fair, Ryder. He-he had so much life left to live! And now, that's all been tore from his grasp."
"Calm down, Marcia. Come down to my house. We'll talk about this. Okay?"
"No." I sobbed. "Call everyone in the Glee Club. Tell them to meet me at the school in the courtyard. We'll talk then."
"Okay."
•
I waited in the courtyard with the band. It had been an hour since I got the news and I was honestly dying on the inside. I was almost half expecting Finn to be with everyone when they came.
It was getting cold and pacing around didn't help. I decided to start without everyone, before the band started complaining.
"You guys know the song, right?" I asked. They nodded. "Okay. Well, I guess we'll start. One, two, three..."
I trailed off as the guitar player started the song and I started singing with him.
Marcia: "If I die young
Bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song"
Kitty: "Lord, make me a rainbow
I'll shine down on my mother."
I turned to see Kitty and Unique.
Kitty and Unique: "She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors.
Oh, and, life ain't always what you think it oughta be, no
Ain't even gray
But she buries her baby."
Marley: "The sharp knife of a short life."
All: "If I die young
Bury me in satin.
Lay me down on a bed of roses.
Sink me in the river at dawn.
Send me away with the words of a love song."
The three raced up to me as they saw the tears forming in my eyes. We all hugged as another voice joined us.
Jake: "And I'll be wearing white when I come into your kingdom."
Ryder: "I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger."
I raced to my boyfriend to cry on his shoulder as Artie, Tina and Brittany all came up and continued singing with us.
All: "So, put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done
A penny for my thoughts
Oh no
I'll sell 'em for a dollar
They're worth so much more
After I'm a goner
Maybe then you'll hear the words I've been singing
Funny when your dead how people start listening"
As the band played the little instrumental part, we all stood together, hold hands and singing.
All: "If I die young
Bury me in satin
Lay me down on a
Bed of roses
Sink me in the river
At dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song"
Marley: "The ballad of a dove"
Marcia: "Go with peace and love"
Girls: "Gather up your tears
Keep 'em in your pocket
Save 'em for a time when you're really gonna need 'em
Oh"
All: "The sharp knife
Of a short life
Oh well
I've had just enough time"
Boys: "So put on your best, boys"
Girls: "And I'll wear my pearls"
Tears began to rush down my face.
Finn Hudson, the co-leader and former star of Glee club, was dead.
•
Kurt: "Step one
You say "We need to talk"
He walks
You say "Sit down
It's just a talk"
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through"
Mercedes: "Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines
Of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came"
It was the day. Finn's funeral. The New Directions as well as the alumni, Finn's mom and step-dad, his old football buddies and his old teachers were there.
Burt, Puck, Mr. Schue and a few other family members were carrying his casket down the aisle. I stood next to Ryder and Marley. Ryder held me close as I began to cry.
Why?
Puck: "Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up
With you all night
Had I known"
Alumni: "How to save a life"
Artie: "Let him know that you know best
Cause after all, you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence"
Jake: "Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you"
New Directions (old and new): "And where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up
With you all night
Had I known how to save a life"
They placed Finn's casket on one of those table things and they retreated to their seats. I noticed a tearful Rachel hugging a full on crying Carol.
All: "Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up
With you all night
Had I known how to save a life"
Mr. Schue: "How to save a life"
Rachel: "How to save a life"
We sat down as the priest stood up. I held Ryder's hand, the tears falling down my face. He gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.
"We are gathered here today to celebrate the life and to mourn the death of Finn Christopher Hudson." the priest started. "Finn was a young man. He was 19 years of age and later this year, he would be turning 20."
It broke my heart. Finn's birthday was 10 months away. In 10 months, he would've been 20. He would've been a man.
"Many of Finn's friends and family are here, including his fiancée, Rachel Berry, who wanted to say a few words about Finn."
Rachel stood up and wiped a few tears from her eyes before walking up to the podium. She took a deep breath before speaking.
"I remember the first time I seen Finn walking through the hallways. My first impression was the usual stereotypes about jocks, but they soon changed and I found myself falling for him. Unfortunately, he was with Quinn Fabray. One of our 'first dates' was a picnic on the stage in the auditorium. I told him he could kiss me if he wanted to. And he did." Rachel took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "We had a very rocky relationship, but no matter what, I loved Finn and he loved me. Finn will always be in my heart and I will never forget him."
The room was in tears as Rachel stepped down and Blaine and Sam stood up. Sam held a guitar in his hand.
"Hello everyone." Blaine started. "My name is Blaine Anderson. I was close friends with Finn. He and I sang this song at the end of his senior year and I feel like it kind of matches the situation. So, I'd like to dedicate this song to Finn Hudson. May he rest in piece."
Sam began to play a familiar tune.
Blaine: "Another turning point
A fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist
Directs you where to go
So make the best of this test
And don't ask why
It's not a question
But a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs
And still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable
But in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life"
There were a few claps as Blaine wiped away his tears and sat down.
The funeral dragged on and on and all I could think about was the fact that Finn's lifeless body was inside that casket. I wish it'd pop open and he'd pop out and say, "Surprise! I'm alive!"
Finally, it ended. We went to the cemetery to bury Finn. I didn't let go of Ryder's hand. We all had flowers that we placed on his casket before it was lowered into the ground. He was buried right next to his father, Christopher Hudson.
He's gone. Finn Hudson is gone.
