Chapter Two
(No one is happy)
River sat on top of a picnic table looking out at the lake on his family’s property. He'd known he’d have to get married eventually but hadn’t planned on doing it now. His brother hadn’t married until he was 27; River was only turning 24 in a couple of months. The blue eyed man ran a hand threw his light brown hair and sighed. His only consolation was it wouldn’t just be him getting married. His buddies had all been informed they would be as well.
“I hate your father!” Hunter grumbled sitting down on top of the picnic table next to the Lord’s son.
“I second that.” Dustin said. “I vote we get drunk.” The other two wolves watched as the dark haired wolf put a chest of beer up on the picnic table.
“Sounds good.” River said, not hesitating to pull out a beer. “Where’s Harper and Drew?”
“I don’t think they know yet.” Dustin informed him.
“I just want to know how the hell this happened?!” Hunter said. “What 24 is suddenly a magical number that means we have to get married? What the Fuck?!”
River shrugged. “I don’t know. Trevor was 27 when he married Nancy.” The Lord’s son took a drink of his beer. “I thought I had a few more years.” He got the feeling something was going on they didn’t know about but he wasn’t sure what. Until he knew, he didn’t want to alarm his friends.
“Would someone tell me why the hell I have to get married?!” The trio looked back to see a confused Drew and an angry Harper.
“As soon as we find out why we are too, we’ll let you know.” Dustin offered. “Beer?”
“Got anything stronger?” Harper inquired.
Dustin smirked at the red haired wolf. “No. We have to be coherent tomorrow.”
“Why?” Hunter and River said in near perfect unison.
“You stopped listening at 'you have to get married' part didn’t you?” Drew said, not exactly surprised. The two wolves shrugged. “Each Pack is sending a prospective bride for you.” He said looking at River.
“What?!” River said as his eyes widened. “Fuck! I have to choose tomorrow!”
“No.” Duncan replied annoyed his friend had in fact stopped paying attention at the word married. “You meet them tomorrow night but you don’t choose tomorrow. You have until the second to last day of the Unity Gathering.”
“You don’t even have to choose one of them. They are who their pack thinks is their best female to offer you.” Drew added. “You’re the Lord’s son so you get first choice. After you choose then we will according to position. Basically you choose; then Hunter, then me, then Dustin, then Harper and so on.”
“Fine, River has to be coherent but why do I?” Harper questioned.
“Because we’re his friends and as the next ones to choose we have to meet the potential brides as well.” Dustin replied.
Harper looked at the Lord’s son. “I really hate your father.”
River shrugged and tossed the redhead a beer. “This better not explode.” Harper grumbled. Popping the can open he took a drink. ‘At least it didn’t explode’ He thought to himself.
“Married…guess this means no more ...fun.” Hunter commented. The group nodded and fell silent. Each slightly depressed by the realization. Their playtime with women was over.
