George was a good person, he never hurt anyone, not even Alby. Alby was the first person George saw when he they sent him up. It was just him and George. George was so scared, he couldn't remember anything, not even his own name. But Alby, he helped him through it. Told him that they have to depend on each other, if they are going to survive.

"Over here George" Alby said walking over to the walls in the forest. he stopped just in front of a window, "Look inside" he said, George looked, what he saw would haunt him for the rest of his life. A big creature with mechanical legs, and a slimy body walk by. George practically fell when he back away

"what is that?" he asked

"not sure, but whatever it is it makes this horrible noise, like something dying. They haven't gotten in here, so you'll be safe" Alby replied and walked up to help George up from where he had fallen. "we have to trust each other, and depend on each other from now on. And if anything, bad, happens to either one of us, we have to promise to help no matter what the cost. Same goes for anyone else who may come up " he said finally looking at him. "Got it!" George didn't say anything but nodded in return.

*Alby's POV*

He was the second one, and now he was the first. We had made a promise to help each other no matter what the cost. Now, i regret it. How can i do this? he's my best friend, we've been through so much. I can't imagine how Ann is dealing with this, i mean he did just drop the biggest bomb on he. She's his sister.

"What did he mean by it was your fault" i asked her. she was sitting on a bed in the Med-jacks along with Jeff who was bandaging her wrists.

"how am i supposed to know? i only remember my name Alby" she spat

"i'm just curious"

"you're not the only one" Newt said walking in "are you alright? he asked Ann sitting down next to her looking at her wrists.

"I'm fine" she smiled

"is he tied up?" i intervened

"yeah" Newt replied

"what are you going to do" i heard jeff ask

"what i promised him i would do" i said before walking out

It was now dark out, i had spent the whole day in my room pacing the floor, i can't believe i'm going to to do this. a promise is a promise. I had a few Gladers carry George out into the Glade and tie him back up to a stump. After, i had told everyone to go to sleep, i had wanted to do this alone.

I was sitting by a fire whittling a stick into a spear.

"you warm enough George? Strange isn't it? the way it never seems to get any warmer or colder, every night's exactly the same. Do you think it's even real?" i spoke, we sat in silence for a good while "The firsts days were the hardest. You're lucky, you had someone to greet you when you came up. I didn't have that. It was just me, alone in this place for almost a month. After a while it started to feel like a punishment. The worse part is not even remembering what you're being punished for. Not REMEMBERING anything. Our names sure-- words, and skills, basic stuff... just enough to know something's missing."

i stopped and looked up at him. "You saved my life, you know that? before you showed up, i'd finally had enough, see that tree?" i said looking at the big, tall tree far off in The Glade. "i climbed up to the top-- tied off the rope. I was all set to jump...wasn't even scared. wherever i was going. It couldn't be any worse than this place. Then i heard it... that alarm. The same sound I heard when i arrived. I climbed down and there you were soaking wet... couldn't even remember your own name. I thought someone was telling me something-- to hold on, just a bit longer. It felt like a second chance." I stood up and walked over to where he was sitting, holding my spear.

"I'm sorry George... i never should have showed you what was out there, but i just had to... you needed to know." i turned my head away "You don't have to say anything.." i said and knelt in front of him face to face with the boy i had helped out of the box, the boy who was so scared at first, but then grew happy the more that more people came up. But this wasn't him, he was changing, he was more angry. "Just give me a sign. Let me know if you're still in there."

He just stared at me, and then let out a horrible scream. I backed away. "I'll do better next time" i said, and then finally i drew back my spear, and screamed before driving it into his chest. he was dead.

"I'll do better" i spoke again, and just stood there, with a tear streaming down my face.
