Chapter 19

*NEWTS POV*

"Why won't she wake up?" I asked

"hey man we got our job the same way you did" Jeff spoke

I noticed Thomas staring at the girl as well as Ann. 

"do you recognize her?" i asked them

"no" they said in unison

"really? cause she seemed to recognize you two" i said

"what about the note?" Thomas asked me

"we'll worry about the note later" i said

"i think you should worry about it now" he replied

"we've got enough to deal with at the moment"

"he's right Newt, if the box isn't coming back up how long do you think we'll last?" Ann asked scared

"no one's said that, let's not jump to any conclusions," i turned to look back at the girl " we'll just wait till she wakes up. somebody's got to have some answers around her" i said

"okay-" i heard thomas say and saw him heading out

"where are you going?" i asked

"back into the maze" he said, i looked at Minho hinting him to follow him. I turned back and saw Ann staring at her, she looked upset. "are you okay love?"

"i'm fine" she said almost  immediately 

"you sur-"

"yeah, Newt i'm fine" she said with a slight smile

"are you sure you don't recognize her?"

"honestly,  don't know..." she said and hesitated a moment before turning and walking out. I decided to just leave her be.

*ANNS POV*

i had walked outside the med-jacks, i couldn't tell Newt i knew who she was and that i worked with her, and Thomas... as i was lost in my thoughts i heard a voice calling my name. I turned and it was Minho.

"Ann come with me, Thomas wants to go back into the maze and you should come with us." he said as he walked up to me with fry and a few other behind him

"sure" i smiled and followed him back to the woods to meet Thomas. I can't believe i was about to go into the maze, the place Newt told me Never to go.

"will this be enough?" Minho asked as we reached Thomas, he smiled

"let's go" he said and we took off into the maze. we ran for who knew how long until we finally reached were the dead Griever was. 

"that's Disgusting!" i said looking at the thing smashed in-between the walls

"there's something in there" i heard Zart say

"you mean besides a Griever Pancake?" Fry asked

Thomas went to reach in, and then the Griever moved a little

"Whoa" we all said and backed away, Fry pushing me behind him

"i thought you said it was dead" Fry spoke

"was is it a reflex" Zart asked

"you hope!" said Winston

"okay come on let's try and pull it out" Thomas said. We all grabbed one leg and pulled as hard as we could. Finally it came out, but as it did we all kind of fell onto the ground. Minho reached in and pulled out a Cylinder like object with a red number on it

"what is that?" i asked

"well whatever it is can we take back to the glade, i don't want to meet this guys friends" Fry said

"yeah, it's getting late. Come on" said Minho and we all took off back to the glade

when we got back to the glade we were met by Chuck

"Chuck what's going on?" Minho asked

"Gally, he found out you guys went into the maze. He's called a meeting" he said, me and Minho looked at each other and then toward the homestead and then took off toward it

we walked in, i saw Gally and i was so mad.

"look who's back from their little field trip" he spoke

"what the hell Gally you think you can call a keeper meeting with out us?" i practically yelled. He just shrugged

"well we found this," Thomas said, handing the object to Newt "on our little field trip" he said looking at Gally

"These are the same letters
we get in our supplies." said Newt looking up from the object

 "Yeah. Whoever put us here obviously made the Grievers." replied Minho 

"This is the first real clue, the first anything, you've found in over 3 years. Right, Minho?" Thomas asked

"Right." he answered

"Newt, we gotta go back out there. Who knows where this might lead us." Thomas said 

"You see what he's trying to do, right? First he breaks our rules...and then he tries to convince us to abandon them totally. The rules are the only thing that have ever held us together. Why now are we questioning that? If Alby was here, you know he'd agree with me. This shank needs to be punished." Gally said

"You're right." Newt said handing the thing to Minho

"Newt-" i spoke

"Thomas broke the rules. One night in the pit, and no food." he said

"Come on, Newt!" i complained as well as Fry

"One night in the pit? Do you think that's gonna stop him from going into the maze?"Gally complained even more

"No. And we can't just have non-runners running into the maze whenever they feel like it. So let's just make this official. Starting from tomorrow, you're a runner." Newt said finally. causing me to smile a little. 

"Wow." Gally said mad and walked out pushing past me, with the others following him.

"Thanks, Newt. " Thomas said before leaving, Newt didn't really say anything just looked form me to  Thomas and then nodded once and looked away. He was upset i could tell, but i didn't push it and just kissed his cheek and walked out.
