We sprinted through along the stream to grandmas house. Them like silent graceful swans who were also secretly ballet students, and me like a noisy clumsy elephant on roller blades for the first time. I could see the cottage in the distance, it was slowly getting bigger and bigger, but I was racing against time. Time seemed to be winning. A random surge of pain shot through my skull. I fell to the ground, shouting in pain. Hansel and Gretal stopped abruptly, turning to me. Gretal turned to Hansel, eyes wide. "Help me carry her!" They slung my arms over their shoulders, and half dragged me as fast as they could. My body didn't seem to be doing what I wanted it do to. I couldn't talk, couldn't move. It was like I was paralysed. We were emerging at the driveway of the house. It was very familiar surroundings to me. The slightly mouldy white bricks, amazing red rose garden, large sunny windows and a path leading across the lawn to the oak front door. Hansel unslung my arm from his shoulder and sprinted to the door, slamming on it frantically, crying out "Gretchid! Gretchid! It's Hansel! We have Red! Open up! Hurry!" Gretal laid me down on the front lawn, unable to hold my weight, which seems to have doubled as a result of getting taller, and ridiculously more muscular. I saw the old lady pop up in the window. I grinned. I was saved! I saw a gun prop up on the windowsill and point towards me. She lined up, putting me in her sights. I tried to move but my body wasn't listening.
An ear splitting bang shot through the air.
There were two symmetrical screams coming from Hansel and Gretal as they saw my grandma about to blow my brains out. People tell you that in situations where your life is threatened, time seems to slow down. The complete opposite happened to me. Everything speed up, it was so fast I felt like I was going to be sick. Hansel dived in front of the window, interfering with the path of the bullet. He was silent as the bullet struck him in the chest, exiting out the other side. His body abruptly fell lifelessly to the ground. The thud hanging in the air.
