Disclamer:

I in no way shape or form take any credit for any of the characters or any of the key events mentioned during this story - that is all down to the amazing J.K. Rowling and I am simply taking the setting she has laid at the beginning of the Half Blood prince and modifying it in places to change the back aspects. This woman is a magician in her own right and owns every and all rights to the stories... Thanks :D

As Hermione walked to her first lesson since returning to Hogwarts she made a mental note that she was going to make this year count, do something good. The third floor halls were so blocked with first years trying to find there way that she struggled to find the exit to the staircases, once she found them she jogged happily down the endless flights which decided they would be kind to her and not change, she had long since noticed that in the first month or so they pin pointed new-bes to change on. Once she reached the dungeon corridor she walked hastily towards the classroom clutching her potions book to her chest. But before she reached it, someone stood on her cloak which tripped her- she turned round.

"Taking potions are we Granger?" It was Draco Malfoy, the bane of her life. He had hated her since second year and insisted on making her life difficult for fun since then.

"Clearly not." She smiled sarcastically back at him "Would you please get off of my cloak?" He removed his foot with indignant slowness. "Thanks" she added before walking through the classroom doors and making a bee line to Katie Bell, fellow Gryffindor who the night before had filled them in on a holiday romance she had had with a wizard from Belgium. Hermione had always thought she herself didn't quite have a normal life, and maybe that was what was missing. On her way in she passed a potion which she thought smelled of green apples, parchment and expensive men's cologne... whatever it was it smelt wonderful, almost as if it reminded her of someone but she couldn't quite put a finger on who.

Malfoy swaggered through the door and walked straight past the potion before stopping and taking a whiff, "God granger, have you smelt this potion?! Its disgusting! It smells just like you!" He jeered and slotted in between his two friends, Pansy Parkinson and Blaise Zabini.

"Sod off, Malfoy!" Hermione spat feeling her cheeks flush with embarrassment.

"Granger! Malfoy! Be quiet both of you!" the old man standing at the front of the class ushered, he was wearing navy blue robes and a scholars cap. He looked as if he was blessed with a naturally happy personality, or as if he was just genuinely happy to be there? He was rather plump and the clumps of hair sticking out the bottom of his cap had greyed with time.

"Yes professor" They both answered and Hermione shot Draco a look, 'oh if only they could kill' she thought. She didn't mean it of course, but she hated the way he made her feel.

"Now class" continued the professor. "My name is professor Slughorn as you are aware from the beginning of term speeches. I wont bore you with long introductions as I believe in a practical approach." He smiled happily. "Now as you walked in I'm sure many of you saw the potion on the bench" He started "Could anyone tell me what it may be?"

Hermione felt an erge to answer the question that made her fingers twitch but she kept to herself as her earlier suspicions had been shot down in flames through Malfoys outburst. Blaise Zabini raised his hand instead, he was a Slytherin but was very clever and had never been nasty to Hermione even though he was Draco's friend.

"Yes Mr Zabini?" The professor asked.

"Amortentia, sir" he answered surely.

"Good, very good. And what is Amortentia?" Slughorn continued and Blaise raised his hand again "Yes, Mr Zabini?"
