Chapter 8

(Alliances being made)

Ares stood in the temple of Hephaestus in the Agora ruins. He was more than a little curious as to whose blood was in his bride. The one thing he did know was that it wasn’t his. It would probably surprise the other Olympians to know Ares kept very clear records on who had his blood in them. He’d even arranged for some to be killed.

As he stood in what remained of the temple, he might have considered Hephaestus himself, but knew it wasn’t possible. The God of Fire and Iron had never had a lover other than Aphrodite. Silently, he went over the gods and their abilities in his head. Poseidon was water so he doubted that. Hades was so caught up with Persephone, he was also unlikely to have fathered a child. Then again, it could have been before Persephone.

Helios was possible. After all, the sun is fire and Alex had said fire. It was a possibility. Then again, the fact she’d seen things so clearly could be Apollo, The God of Prophecy. Remembering her beauty, he considered Aphrodite. The God of War was silently amused at that thought. But the fact that Aphrodite was not overly fond of fire made it more unlikely.

“It could be anyone,” He sighed.

“Does it matter?” Ares was more than a little surprised to hear his sister’s voice. “Would you change your mind if she turned out to have Hephaestus’ blood in her?”

“No,” Ares said without a thought. “I want Alexandra.”

“Then why are you letting it bother you?”

“It’s not that it bothers me sister. But you must admit, it is a bit concerning that it seems we have lost track of one of our descendents,” He replied.

“You have a valid concern,” The blonde goddess agreed. “Though I think you may want to shift your focus from whose blood she has in her to how to protect your mortal bride.”

“The ring is on her. No other god can claim Alexandra.”

“No, but they could bring harm to her,” Athena warned.

“Who would dare?”

“My mother,” Cupid said, appearing before them. Looking at The God of War, he said, “While I do not believe she will find support amongst most of our kind, there are others she could call on.”

“Her followers are not…”

“I do not believe it is Aphrodite’s worshipers you need to worry about,” Athena said, interrupting the dark-haired god. “I believe Cupid is suggesting that if she is desperate enough, she may call on immortal creatures to do her bidding.”

Ares began to pace. He had expected some of his fellow Olympians to object to the girl, but had never considered one of them might call upon immortal creatures to harm the girl.

“I know you don’t normally want to listen to me, but may I make a suggestion?” The Goddess of Wisdom inquired.

The God of War stopped pacing and looked at his sister. “If it will help me with Alexandra, I’ll at least here you out.”

“You have allowed the girl to return to her home, so I must assume you are sending a servant or two to watch over her.”

“I am,” Ares confirmed.

“Perhaps an immortal protector would also be wise to send to watch your mortal bride,” They gray-eyed goddess suggested.

“Yes, but the creatures cannot enter all places.”
