Chapter 10

(Thoughts and a Dream)

Alex walked slowly along the beach, alone. There were swimmers every now and then, but no one was with her. The water ran over her feet every now and then, but the redhead barely noticed. Her mind was everywhere but on what was happening at the beach around her.

‘Ares is a god?’ The concept was outlandish at best. Alex couldn’t understand how the Greek gods could even be real. She’d grown up believing they were a myth. How was a Christian-raised girl supposed to grasp the concept of other gods being around?

Alex began to think about this concept and the Ten Commandments entered her head. Very quickly, one commandment stuck out in her head. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” she whispered to herself as she walked. Her blue eyes suddenly opened wide at the words given to Moses by God. Nowhere in the law did it say there were no other gods. Alex had always taken for granted that there was only one God. She’d never considered that there might be other gods.

Suddenly not feeling so well, she sat down on the beach. Tears began to stream down her face as fear and uncertainty began to take hold. If she had taken one concept for granted, the young woman wondered how many others she’d taken for granted. How much trouble was she really in? Alex lowered her head onto her bent knees where her arms were wrapped around them. What was she going to do now?

It was late when Ares arrived at Alexandra’s dorm room. As a resident advisor, Alex had her own room, which made entering so late rather easy for the God of War. He approached the bed and did not like what he saw. While Alex still looked beautiful, he could see dried tear stains on her face.

Ares was suddenly angry and wanted to know who had upset her so much. Taking out a special substance from a pouch Morpheus had given him, he let the magic drops of powder fall onto his bride. Sitting down next to her on the bed, he put a hand to her temple and entered the woman’s dreams. He would find out why she was upset and would, if someone had harmed her, make them and his servants pay for allowing such a thing.

Ares found himself at the Temple of Zeus. A smile crossed his face as he found she was reliving the last time they’d been together.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Alex questioned. “You’re not supposed to be real. It goes against everything I’ve ever known!”

Ares eyes widened as the dream shifted and he realized she must have figured it out. The Greek god silently cursed himself for not watching the woman more closely himself.

“How could you not tell me?” She said angrily.

“I did tell you.”

The Ares standing before Alex in her dream vanished and she turned to face the real God of War standing just off to the side.

Ares watched as accusing and hurt blue eyes turned his way. “I never lied to you, Alexandra,” He told her. “I have always been honest where you are concerned.”

“You didn’t tell me that the ring wouldn’t come off once I put it on!” She stated harshly.

Ares would normally snap at someone who took up such an attitude with him, but he felt sympathy toward the young mortal woman. Deep down, he knew in some ways, he had tricked her.

“If you remember correctly, Alexandra, it was not I that put the ring on your finger, but you.” He watched as Alex looked away, remembering he was right.

“You didn’t tell me what it meant,” She replied, not looking at him. The red-haired woman glanced at the ring on her right finger and said, “I’m still not sure what it means.”

It wasn’t until Alex felt her chin gently lifted up that she realized Ares had moved. His amber eyes looked directly into hers and he said, “It means you belong to me, Alexandra.”

“Don’t I get a say in…”

“You agreed when you put my ring on,” He said firmly.

“You didn’t tell me exactly what…”

“No I didn’t,” Ares agreed. Alex fell silent, surprised he was agreeing with her. “However, you didn’t ask either.” The God of War gently stroked his right hand over her left cheek. “I have never lied to you, Alexandra, nor will I.”

“Why do I think there is more that you aren’t telling me? What does this ring mean? Meredith thought I was going to be sacrificed to you.”

Ares eyes suddenly narrowed as the God of War took on a very menacing look. Scared, Alex tried to step back, but the amber-eyed god didn’t let her move more than an inch away before he stopped her.

“If you were going to be sacrificed to me, we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Ares said angrily. “Your friend doesn’t know as much about me as she might think!” He sneered.

The God of War released her and turned around. He took only a step when he felt Alex grab his right arm. Surprised, the god looked back to see his bride looking at him with pleading eyes.

“Please don’t hurt Meredith!” Alex begged. “She’s just concerned for me. We’re friends and…”

“You are mine, Alexandra, I will allow no one to come between us, least of all some mortal,” He warned. “Tell your mortal friends that they are not to interfere with our affairs.”

“If they do?” The mortal woman said rather daringly.

Ares was next to her in less than a second. “If it is a male, I will destroy him.” Before she could react, the dark-haired god had taken her into his arms and crushed his lips down on hers.

Alex had liked her previous kisses with the God of War, but this was different. This kiss wasn’t passionate, it was flat out possessive. She’d heard mentions of possessive kisses, but she had never experienced one. She tried to pull away, but Ares didn’t allow it. A moment later, she felt his lips soften on hers and the kiss became passionate.

When Ares finally released her, the redhead was breathing very hard. The God of War was pleased as he watched his bride pant. “Only I may kiss and touch you. Anyone else tries and they will feel my wrath.”

Alex sat up in bed and looked around her dark room. Her window was still closed, but she had no doubt that the God of War had in fact been in her room and in her dreams. Concern flowed through her as she remembered Ares’ warning. Her friends might want to help, but she wasn’t sure if she could let them.

She felt her ring in the dark. “I need to find out what you mean. If he isn’t offering the information, then it can’t be good.” No longer wanting to sleep, she got up and went over to her computer. Maybe she could find something about the ring on the internet.
