Jessica Carter was the next to the oldest out of five. Three overprotective brothers and the baby sister that she thought she would never have. Her mother Katherine Carter was an attorney at a huge law firm in Washington, and her father William Carter was the top accounting executive for DC Corporation. Her brother Brandon was the oldest, then Jessica, followed by the twins Braxton, Bradley, and my baby sister Joseline. We grew up in a well-known community, and all were very close. Our father got the house built from the ground up as an anniversary gift to our mother.
I always said if, or when I got married I wanted to be as happy as my parents. As a child, I always thought my mother and father were King and Queen because they always called my brothers, my sister, and I, their little Prince and Princesses. My father always made sure my mom looked like one of those movie stars, you know like Liz Taylor. I know some of the ladies at the law firm hated my mother because of how beautiful she was. She didn't look like a lawyer, but more like a supermodel. She wasn't afraid to handle the big sharks like they were little goldfish which I thought made her so brave.
My father worked at this big corporation. He did all those fancy presentations for those fortune 500 companies. He had a way with words, I guess that's how he swept my mother off her feet.
They were high school sweethearts and got married right after college. She got pregnant with Brandon her junior year in college, and then I followed her senior year, and the list kept growing, but it never stopped her from finishing top of her class. Directly after she graduated she went into grad school and then off to law school. Right after she made partner, Joseline came along. It was kinda cool having a little sister because my brothers had a way of getting on my nerves by being so overprotective, but it was cool because there were a lot of jerks in school.
My mother was a triple threat. She had beauty, brains, and a great family. Yes, we were the American Dream.
My brother Brandon, right after high school joined the Marines, but he came home every holiday. The twins worked with dad, and my sister pursued her career in modeling. I went to Washington State University with a major in criminal justice. I was fascinated with law. I not only wanted to know the law, but I wanted to become it. I used to watch Madlock and In the Heat of the Night. As a child and I knew every episode of Law and Order in college. I was fascinated with crime-fighting and solving the who, what, when, where, and why's. I knew that was my passion and my dream.
I studied everything there was to know about criminal justice with every minute of the day. Both of my parents supported me when I told them I wanted to be the DA. I got my inspiration from Alex Cavanaugh from Law and Order.
After I graduated, I received my law degree. Ten years later I became sworn in by the court of law as the new District Attorney of Washington D.C.
My entire family was there to cheer me on, it was the happiest day of my life.
I had a lot to learn and was very eager to learn. I asked my mother a lot of legal questions. What does this mean, and how does this work? My mother and father both made sure I was ready for this new journey in my life.
My first case was this young man found dead in an alley not too far from his home. The lead detective on the case was this extremely handsome young man and was well known on the force. From what I was told his father was killed in the line of duty, and because of that he worked his way up the ladder.
What I liked about him was not only was he attractive, but he was very professional and he made his job look easy which worked well for me. He had all his evidence together before he presented me with a case.
I could tell every time he would come to my office because my receptionist Harmony East would just light up like Christmas morning.
I heard my phone buzz "Yes Harmony?"
"Detective Sanchez is here ma'am."
"Send him in."
"Hello, Jessica Carter." He said.
"Detective Sanchez please, have a seat. "
Now I must admit I was very professional and I took my job very seriously, but every time I saw this man I couldn't take my eyes off him. My mind always wandered to Never Neverland whenever he was around
"Jessica, did you hear anything that I said?" He spoke, breaking me out of my trance.
"Yes I was listening. I'm tired of these cases involving these gangs".
"Are you guys getting any leads on this? "What is GTU Gang Task Unit doing about these punks?" I asked.
"They're doing the best they can and I'm up to my collar in cases. It seems like the body count keeps rising." He told me. One thing was for sure, Johnathan Sanchez hated gangs as much as I enjoyed putting them away.
We had put in countless hours into this case until we started seeing double.
"How about a cup of coffee?" Johnathan asked.
"Sure I need a pick me upper!"
We settled into a booth at the Starbucks on the corner of Central Ave. I was a regular there so as soon as we walked in I was greeted with a smile.
"Hi, Jessica!" Alex the young man from behind the counter greeted me with a smile. The whole crew was there. Kalen, D.J, Auybree, Brandon, and Clark. They were always my regular crew when I came in during the late shift. I believed they all went to the same college, but they really enjoyed their job.
"The regular?" Alex asked me and I smiled.
"Make that two."
I could see Aubrey look at me and smile, but I gave her that look like don't you say anything. Kalen was making our drinks while I was talking to Brandon and Clark. They were asking me was I working on another big case. I told them, yes, but I couldn't go into full details. Each time, it was almost like teaching a class because they were so fascinated.
"Two Mocha cappuccinos!" Kalen called out. I grabbed our drinks and we settled in for a booth in the back that was kind of private.
We went over the profile of the case and it had 5th Street written all over it. "What all do we know about them?" I asked.
"I know that their leader is at Sing Sing for the brutal torture and murder of Mohammad Akbar. He accused him of breaking up with his sister which sent her in a state of depression so he tortured him for several days making him beg for his death. He then slit his throat and threw him off the Manhattan bridge.
"These boys are dangerous Jessica. Please be careful! I couldn't live with myself if anything were to happen to you!" He pleaded with me. I stopped in mid-sip to look him in the eye. His statement caught me off guard.
"I apologize. That was inappropriate".
I smiled to break that elephant that had suddenly entered the room.
"It's perfectly fine. I said. No need to apologize Detective Sanchez."
"Please call me Jonathan." I insist.
"Well Johnathan I insist, shall we get back to the case?" I tried to keep it professional, but lord knows this man makes my heart race each time I see him. But as of right now we have a murder to solve, so personal will have to wait, but the name Jessica Sanchez did have a good ring to it.
****Okay you guys!!! Now that you've met the two characters, it's time to bring them together and thicken the story-line. Hope you enjoy.....****
