5th Street Boyz

After our honeymoon to Australia, it was back to work as usual. I still had to put together my case against CAB for the murder of Reginald Lawson. I studied the crime scene and the autopsy report. I was trying to dig into the background of J.Blake and Stitches. I really wanted the head man because he pretty much ordered all the slayings, but as of now, I owed justice to the Lawson family. Just as I was beginning to wrap up the evidence for this case my husband walked in with another file against the 5th Street Boyz.

Now 5th Street was just as ruthless as CAB, but their body count was higher because they basically shot and killed just because. They pretty much cleared out that entire block. Either you were on 5th Street or a family member. Other than that, they scared everyone away. They made it hell for DCPD to even patrol the neighborhood because they would throw bottles and had the neighborhood look so bad until it looked like the last place you would want to be. This was another retaliation against C.A.B. This was the case of Omar Santiago, another member of C.A.B, and the cousin of the late Carlos Santiago. This was seriously getting out of hand.

"Hi, baby. How was your day?" Jonathan asks.

"It was going good until you walked in with that file. What is it or better yet who?" I asked.

"Sweetheart meet Omar Santiago. He was shot execution-style and they cut his finger off."

"Great another trophy piece."

"Babe I'm sick of these Lil thugs. They're worse than the damn mafia."

"Trust me I know. As much as I hate it, it's still our job."

"Don't remind me." I shake my head.

"I have to get back to the office but I'll see you later. Love you!"

"Love you too"

Omar Santiago, why does that name sound familiar? I turned on my computer and typed in his name. Of course just about half of C.A.B came up. He was the cousin of one of the top dawgs, and he obviously pissed somebody off. He was one of the ones killed in the Central Ave shooting. Okay, now it clicked. As I looked at the pictures I saw that he was shot directly at close-ranged. Now that takes a lot of balls to just walk up to someone and pull the trigger.

I read day in and day out, getting to know who 5th Street really was. I knew that they were going to be my most difficult case by far. People were scared of C.A.B, but 5th Street Boyz was walking nightmares. I knew it was going to be hard as hell trying to put this case together. I decided to take a ride over to the rec center to talk to Rodney Mullins a former gang member to 5th Street known as  Black. He and his wife opened the center so that the kids in the hood could have a Lil taste of childhood. It was amazing how he and Stephanie were trying to find a positive in this negative place.

"DA Detective Mrs. Sanchez," he said with the biggest smile on his face.

He never called me by my real name, but it was cute.

"Hi, Rod how are you? Where is your beautiful wife?"

"You know how I do and she's downstairs teaching crafts. What brings you by?"

"Well I have another homicide dealing with 5th Street"

"Yea I hear those boys are out of control. How can I try to help?"

"Have you heard anything or has anybody come to you because you know they won't help us?"

"So you want me to talk because nobody else will?"

"I'm at a dead-end Rod! I have no leads or anything. I need any and all the help I can get."

"The only thing I've heard is Chico was behind it, but I'm not sure why. I wouldn't mess with him Jess, he doesn't care who or how old you are. If you cross him, be ready to suffer the consequences. I wouldn't tell anybody, but hell he even scares the hell out of me. Just be careful."

"Thanks and I will. Kiss the family for me."

As I drove back to the office those words played over and over in my head. "If you cross him be ready to face the consequences."

No, he better be ready to deal with my husband. He's twice as crazy as I am. I called Jonathan and told him what all I had come up with. He informed me that they had a witness, but they were too scared to come forward. Who the hell was this guy and why did everyone shake just from the sound of his name?

I got back to the office late so Harmony was already gone for the day. I just wanted to do some more research on this Ramon Carnilla to see who he really was. I sat down at my desk and turned on my computer and saw that I had an email, but there was no subject. I clicked on it and it was a picture of my office and the email said you can't catch a ghost. Who the hell sent this? My heart was racing. I immediately called Jonathan.

"Hey, baby what's up?"

"Jonathan someone sent me an email. I'm going to forward it to you!"

"Are you okay? You sound upset!"

"No, I'm not okay! Someone was here! In my office!

"Stay there I'm on my way!"

"Okay and please hurry! "

For the first time in my career, I am scared. I never thought I would come across a case that I didn't want to face. The fact that it scared me made me more determined. Jonathan got there in fifteen minutes.

"Are you ok sweetheart? "

"I'm fine. It's going to take more than an email. I'm still taking the case. These punks don't scare me!"

"Please don't make me shoot nobody! "

We both laugh.

Once we got home I studied some of his prior convictions. He served seven out of a fifteen-year sentence for severely beating his sister's husband for slapping her after an argument. They say he beat him so bad until it took ten surgeries to repair his face. I see someone has anger issues. He got out on good behavior so they say, but I just want to know who he paid off. Jonathan came into the study.

"Jess when are you coming to bed?"

"In a minute baby"

"Are you still on the case?"

"Baby this isn't just any case. This is the head leader of 5th Street. Babe this is my biggest case by far."

"That makes the both of us. I'm just worried about you."

"You don't have to worry baby. They must not know who I'm married to!"

We both laugh and head upstairs to bed.

The next morning Jonathan dropped me off at work. He had an unmarked assigned to me at work and on my way home. I didn't like the feeling of being intimidated, but it was another part of our job.

I learned from the DCPD that Omar Santiago was actually thrown off a bridge so his body washed up on the other side of town. That explained why his body was so badly decomposed. He was only eighteen when he died. No matter what his lifestyle was, no one deserves to die like this. It was a never-ending battle because these two gangs were at since before I was born. I gave Harmony the day off because I needed time to focus. I laid out all the evidence I had so far which wasn't much, but it was enough to build character. Omar was actually the trigger man in my first case, the fairground massacre. I take it this was his revenge. Omar was shot in the head and then thrown off the bridge. It was over a year before his body was found.

Now Ramon Carnilla was twenty-five years old and joined 5th Street at the age of thirteen. His mother died from a drug overdose and his father went to prison when he was a child for murder. So let's just say he was a lost child from the beginning. He stayed in fights in school until he eventually dropped out. He started slanging dope when he turned fifteen, and as a sweet sixteen present to himself, he shot and killed this man for stepping on his sneakers. He's been in and out of juvenile detention just about his whole childhood and that's how he became the fearless leader of 5th Street. They respected him for never backing down to anything or anyone. I knew that I would have my hands full on this one, but just because everyone else was afraid of him didn't mean a thing to me. The quicker I could get him off the streets the better.
