As I arrive at the precinct my pager went off. There's a shoot out on 5th Street. I'm seriously not in the mood for these hoodlums today, but it's what I do. Once we arrive a block away I notice the squad already in gun battle so I park and we're engaged in what seems like a cowboy movie. What the hell is going on? But there's no time for questions. Once I briefly peek to see who's our target I move in closer staying as low as possible. I get up closer and see at least five members from the gang just giving it to us full force. I then move in and take a shot and I see one go down. I think I hit him in the head but won't be sure until the smoke clears. I noticed that one takes off running so I engaged in a foot pursuit. I get off two rounds when he turns and shoots and I realized we weren't running anymore or at least I wasn't. I was hit. All I could feel was my whole left side felt like it was on fire and everything went black.
I arrive at the hospital and I'm rushed into emergency surgery, because apparently he missed the main artery, but I lost a lot of blood, and the bullet was still lodged in my upper part of my shoulder. The bullet hit me in the upper part of my chest and exited through my shoulder. I honestly don't remember what happened next until I woke up almost three months later. I woke up and my Mother was there, along with almost a dozen suits and then "My Angel " appeared Jessica!!
"Welcome back," she said.
"Thanks." I could tell she had been crying. My mother and her parents were all at my bedside. I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or not. I reached out my hand and she grabbed for it and I squeezed it and passed out again. I think it was all the combination of the drugs they were given me, but if I was dreaming, this was the best dream ever. I woke back up again and Jessica was still holding my hand.
"Good morning." I managed to mumble.
"How are you?" She said teary-eyed.
"What happened?"
"You got shot. Don't you remember?"
"5th Street!"
"Yes there was a shootout, and you got hit in your upper left side of your chest, and the bullet traveled through your shoulder. You've been out of it for months. I'm just glad you're okay. The doctor said you should be able to leave in another week. You could either go to your Mother or with me, but only for your recovery. We'll see what happens from there.
"Our.....I mean your house would be great."
"I'll go get your mother."
"Jonathan my boy. I thought I lost you too. I don't know what I would do without you" she said as she cried.
"MaMa please don't cry. I'm not going anywhere. I promise not to leave you. I'm going to stay with Jessica when I leave here okay."
"Yes, she told me. I'll stop by the house while she's at work just until the doctor releases you back to full health. I want you to have this.
"MaMa it's the rosary that PaPa gave you. I can't MaMa it's yours."
"He gave it to me for protection, and now I want you to wear it."
She places it around my neck and at that very moment I realized how truly blessed I am.
"Te Quiero MaMa!"
"Yo tambīèn te Quiero!"
I drift back off to sleep.
My family was there each day, but I was glad when it was time to go home. I was assigned an unmarked around the clock. It was nice to be back home, but it was cold at first and then it appeared to go back to normal. Jessica worked from home for about two weeks and then she started going back to the office. MaMa weighed on me hand and foot until I told her that I was starting to regain full feeling in my arm and that it was ok to leave alone for a while. At first, she was hesitant, but after about a week I was pretty much independent, but that didn't stop her from calling which I expected. I showered and laid back down while Jess was at work but my cell phone rang.
Detective Sanchez!
"I know you said not to contact you but are you ok?" I could hear the fear in Angela's voice.
"Yes, I'm fine. How about you?"
"I was scared. I thought I lost you. Where are you?"
"Well, I'm back at home for now."
"What do you mean. Are y'all getting back together Jonathan? Please don't leave me. I have no one else!"
"I know baby and I'm so sorry for hurting you but I love my wife and I might have a second chance. You have to understand. I'm still here for you as a friend but that's all."
"I understand I guess." She began to cry.
"Once my doctor releases me I'll come to check on you ok."
"You promise."
"You have my word."
I was starting to feel more relaxed and it was okay that Jonathan was back home. At first, it was awkward, but I couldn't just abandon him like that. After all, he was still my husband, but he was not the man I married. He became the man I felt sorry for. I wasn't sure where this was going to lead because the wound was still fresh, but he needs me so we'll see. Harmony enters and asks if I need anything.
"Yea a shot of vodka would be nice."
"At nine in the morning, I'm game!"
We both laugh.
"Did those files come in from the precinct on 5th Street?"
"Yep and here is your mocha latte curiosity of your favorite crew."
"Great. I'm going to need it because today is going to be a long day.
"Well holla if you need me!"
"Will do."
I get back into the homicide of Omar Santiago when of course...another email. I'm now intrigued by this loser so I open it.
"Tell Detective Sanchez that was a warning shot. Next target I won't miss. Glad he's back home but not for long
See you soon.
I just sit there and just stare at the computer. This time instead of fear I'm pissed. This bastard was playing with my emotions. It's going to be my pleasure arresting this piece of shit because he was getting on my last nerve. I continued with my day and tried to get anything I could on him just so I could meet him face to face. I was able to pull up his wrap sheet but it was never anything that stuck to put him away so I made sure that was my mission.
Before I knew it it was already a quarter till five. Harmony came in and told me she was getting ready to go. I stayed until around seven before I left.
I got home a little around seven-thirty and Jonathan was in the kitchen. I had to give him credit because he really was trying.
"Hi. I hope you don't mind but I cooked dinner for you. Just to show a little appreciation for you helping me out these past few months."
"I don't mind. It was sweet of you. Your mother said she'll come to take you to the doctor tomorrow. "
"Okay, but I was hoping you would be there."
"I have to work on the Santiago murder and besides it would put your mom's mind at ease if she's there to see that you're making a full recovery."
"Yea I guess you're right."
We both continue with dinner and have small talk just to move the huge elephants in the room. I clear the table and load the dishwasher. I head upstairs to our master bedroom to take a shower. As I exit and began to put on my lotion Jonathan enters the room and starts to lotion my back. At first, I was about to tell him to stop until I realized how much I missed his touch. He slowly began to kiss me and before I knew it we were in the bed making love over and over. All the anger I felt for him escaped my body and I just allowed him to take over my mind, body, and soul. After he finished we just laid there holding each other and drifted off into a deep sleep.
*****Its not what you think so don't get too excited just yet. There's a reason why I brought them back together but as the email said....not for long. Now you know why its a suspense...keep ya guessing. Keep going because its time to meet the person behind the emails. Remember to Vote and Talk to me. Leave me a comment and I might include you in a chapter ;-)
Love you all!!!
