April's POV
I slipped on a short dress that my mom had bought me a while ago, but since I don't go anywhere I never ended up wearing it. I left my hair natural, and added some heels and a simple necklace.I didn't really bother too much with my makeup and after that I decided that it was good enough for whoever was coming. I mean I probably won't ever see them again anyway because, as I said before, I'm not a very social person.
My mom was finishing up the final touches on dinner while I sat quietly in the living room waiting for our guests to arrive, and soon the doorbell rang.
I got up to my feet and walked over to the door, my black heels clicking against the floor with every step. I took a deep breath because I'm not really the hostess type of person and twisted the door knob.
As soon as I opened the door there was a middle aged women who looked around my moms age, and behind her stood two boys who looked maybe a little older then me and looked like they were identical twins.
The women whom I assumed was Lisa immediately let her hand out for me to shake, and I did. She gave me a big smile as she spoke,"Hi dear, I'm Lisa. And you must be April." I nodded and put on a simple smile, trying to seem at least a bit welcoming and interested.
Lisa then took a step to the side, and motioned to the two boys standing. "This is Ethan, and that's Grayson." I smiled at them too, although they didn't look quite interested in me, and trust me I'm not interested either.
They both looked like the popular jocks in school who acted like dicks and got all the girls. "Oh, where are my manners? Please come in!" I said in a peppy voice, trying to sound excited and happy to be here, but I'm only doing this for my mom.
I showed them the way to the living room, and all three of them took a seat and from there things got a little awkward. Maybe I should have planned something for this part. It was completely silent other than the sounds of Ethan or Grayson's phones going off, signalling that they have received text messages, something that I'm not quite used to.
But after their mom told them to put their phones on silent because it's not polite, it got extremely awkward. I kept my mouth shut and so did the others, there was nothing going on other than Lisa smiling at me widely.
As if my mom was a gift from the gods, she suddenly walked in and saved me. She immediately grabbed Lisa and pulled her in for a hug and then she took a seat next to me and stared at Ethan and Grayson.
She gave them her examining look, the one when she looks them up and down to see if she approves of their appearance. If she doesn't then I'm not allowed to go anywhere near those people, but luckily no one really went through that examination test other than Crawford and he passed.
"So Lisa, do you want to just jump into the subject?" My mom asked, her voice coming across as someone who's nervous. "Yes, I think that would be great." Lisa replied, and suddenly I'm lost. What subject?
"So, I told Grayson and Ethan knows as well." Lisa said to my mom, while I sat here oblivious to everything going on. "Okay then, you can go ahead. But I never talked to her about the subject." I'm the her? What didn't she talk to me about? Why does everybody know besides me?
"Okay... April your mom is currently going through some... Issues. And she wants you to be safe, I mean in case... She's gone... She wants you to have someone to be there for you. And since your mom might leave, she thought that it would be good if you... Got married, to Grayson, my son." Okay, hold up a second let me backtrack.
Why is my mom leaving? Where is she going? Is she tired of me already? Why does she think it's a good idea for me to have someone like Grayson? Why am I getting married at the age of seventeen? And which one is Grayson?
"You must be kidding, right?" That's all I said because I choose not to believe whatever they said. "Honey I know it's hard, but I need to make sure you're going to be safe." I saw the tears in my mom's eyes, and I heard her voice breaking down.
"Where are you going mom?" My full attention was now on her and I couldn't see anything else that's around me. "Heaven hopefully." Was all she said, before it hit me like a truck.
My mom is dying.
"Whh... What?" I asked her, hoping that what I just heard was a mistake. "I have cancer, and I only have a few months left. They caught it late, and I'm in stage three. I need you to get married so I can see you in that white dress."
"I want to see you happy and safe with someone you love." She expects me to love Grayson. She expects me to be happy and to get married.
I blinked a few times trying to understand everything that's going on. Every part of me is wishing that this would turn out to be just a nightmare and soon I'll scream and wake up.
I'll find my mom still there and I won't know who Grayson is. But it's not, it's reality. I'm getting married at the age of seventeen, and my mom is dying because she has stage three cancer.
I felt the corners of my eyes start to blur and I felt my whole body shaking. But I can't let this reaction get to my mom, I need to make these few months the best for her.
"Excuse me, I'll be in my room." And with that, I left. I took deep breaths as I went up the stairs and soon I was back where I always want to be, my room, my happy place, my safe place.
I sat on my bed, staring into blank space, wondering if this is how I'm going to spend the rest of my life. Lost and broken. I suddenly heard a soft knock on the door, and before I can tell the person to go away so I can be alone, he had already come in.
"They sent me up to check on you, since you are kind of my fiancé now. And they said we need to get to know each other better." Grayson's voice was deep and husky.
If you take a closer look at him he's not bad looking at all. But he is going to be the reason that my life would be ruined, so I hate him.
[A/N]
She never even gave poor Gray a chance! I'm sorry I brought cancer into this, but this is the plot. I will not be going into complete detail about her mother's illness because I am not educated in things revolving cancer, I only know that there are stages and 4 would be the last and worst. I do not like writing about things that are serious, but in this story I will. I'm truly sorry for anybody who is suffering from cancer, and I would just like to say that you are strong. Thanks for reading, and I hope u are enjoying it.Edited: 12.17.17
