Gloves

I've been wearing these since I was 10. It was just after my dad left. They made me feel normal. I didn't want people to see what my father had done. He had never seen my hands either. We've been dating for a while and he still hasn't seen the skin on my hands.

"Sweety?" He asked looking into my eyes. We were at his house in his room.

"Yes?" I was sitting on his bed.

"Your glove. Why do you always wear them?"

"...I just like to.."

"Are you sure?"

"Totally."

"You never say totally. What the reason?" He came over and sat beside me.

"I just feel normal wearing them."

"Normal?"

"Yes."

"Can I ask why?"

"I just... I just..." He grabbed my hands and looked in my eyes.

"I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable, but I want to be able to help you. I don't know if this is something you struggle with or something you just like to wear." I stared at his chest not wanting to look at his eyes.

I took deep, slow breaths. All these were is gloves. It was what was under the gloves I was hiding. My dad was an angry person. I looked at my hands. The only time I saw my skin was when I took showers. I slowly took off my glove pulling at the fingers. Once they were both off I closed my hands. My hands were shaking. Why was I so scared?

I slowly opened my hand. Memories of how I got these scars flooded in my head. I had scars from the bottom of my hand to the tip of my fingers. My dad had a knife collection and after he sharpened them he'd "test them out" on my. I looked up. He was staring at all the marks. He took my hand and trace a few of the scars.

"I feel different with all the marks." I kept looking at him. All he was doing was tracing the marks.

"These aren't marks... These tell your story and make you unique."

"You really think so?"

"I know so."

"I love you."

"I love you more."
