Spanish Sahara - Foals
Summary
Josh falls for his best friend.
•••••
It was the first day of school and Tyler couldn't have been more excited at the prospect of making new friends. His mom had already packed his favourite lunch of ham, cheese and lettuce with a sprinkling of pepper, put two cold juice boxes into his Batman satchel and gave him a kiss on the cheek, which meant that he was set to face his day with joy in his chest.
A lot of wide eyed kids stood quiet and despondent, reluctant to interact with complete strangers and saddened by the fact that for several hours they'd be without their parents, their only source of comfort and familiarity, but Tyler was excited by the new adventure. He was on a quest to new lands to discover new amazing people.
The teacher asked for everyone to find a seat and Tyler took the closest one to him, placed his backpack on the table and rummaged for a strip of gum. When his head emerged from his pack, he found the seat beside him was no longer vacant. Another doe eyed boy too shy to interact with anyone, instead sitting quietly with his hands on his lap, twiddling with his thumbs as he looked around sheepishly. Tyler couldn't keep his eyes off the stranger's hair. The boy's blue mane was wildly fascinating.
Tyler wanted this to be his first good friend, so he seized the opportunity to open his new box of crayons and show off his impressive calligraphy. He took out a piece of paper and wrote a note to the shy blue haired boy that read 'Hi. I'm Tyler.'
He slid the paper to Josh and watched him return with the words 'I'm Josh. Nice To Meet You.' Granted, the e's were backwards, but it was still endearing enough.
The two looked to each other simultaneously and shared a smile before the teacher interrupted and gave everyone an assignment to complete by the end of the day. A few nervous faces became riddled with anxiety until they were put at ease by the simplicity of their task. They had to draw a picture of something that makes them happy, or means something to them.
Tyler and Josh took an equally enormous amount of interest in the project and got to work immediately. Between them they shared their drawing supplies, a mammoth amount of crayons and felt tipped pens, while Josh provided candy snacks to keep them motivated and Tyler supplied cranberry juice to stay hydrated. While the rest of the class slowly began to fill with chatter again as pupils took the time to get to make new friends and tried their best to avoid the work, Tyler and josh immersed themselves in their drawings until the bell rang for recess.
The two were inseperable for the entire day. At lunch they traded sandwiches. Tyler was reluctant to give up his but Josh brought pizza for lunch so there was no way he could possibly object. With their stomach's satisfied, they explored as much of the humungous school as they could before being forced to return to class and put their dedicated faces back on. Before the day could end, Tyler and Josh sat satisfied at their table with their completed art laid out, and a table full of empty candy wrappers and squeezed out juice boxes.
When the time came for everyone to come and display their work, the more confident and extroverted kids stood up first to display their pictures. Some drew their families(always stick figures), others drew toys (one kid had a particular knack for his optimus prime robot), while the rest drew natural scenery like rivers and lakes. Everything else was too abstract and poorly drawn to understand until the child had to point it out.
