Don't let me down - the beatles

Summary

Tyler and Josh get adopted.

•••••

"Ooh, ooh, maybe this one." Tyler said as a girl no more than six years of age with dirty blond hair stared at he and Josh. "She seems nice." Tyler added as he came closer to her, staring at her from behind a glass barrier. Josh came up to see the girl, but so did every other fish in the tank, making them completely blend in. The girl became distracted by another tank with blue fish and leaving every other fish in the goldfish tank to swim away.

Tyler let out a soft sigh and Josh comforted him by swimming up to him and putting his fin around his best friend. "Cheer up. I'm sure someone will adopt us soon. Together."

"Together?" Tyler parroted, looking hopefully at Josh. "Together." Josh said comfortingly. "Well be put into a huge glass bowl with lots of colourful stones and a beautiful toy castle to swim in and out of. And our owner will feed us that magic food that they sprinkle and we're gonna be super happy and grow fat together."

"But what if we don't get adopted together?" Tyler said as his pessimistic thoughts couldn't be contained.

"I won't let that happen. You're my best friend. I've known you my whole life, Tyler. Seven days is a lot of time to know a person, and I know I won't let them separate us."

Tyler let a weak smile paint his face as he swam up to the glass and looked at all the other pets in the shop, all eager to be adopted and taken somewhere where love awaited them --- all except Josh. He had enough love to last a lifetime floating right beside him.

"I can't believe it!" Tyler exclaimed as he swam in circles. "I can't believe it! We got adopted!" Tyler swam to the edge of the container that held him. Josh's container was jut beside him. "When we get to our tank we're gonna swim every inch of it! Every bit."

"You and me buddy." Josh responded with an equal amount of enthusiasm. They couldn't see each other but were close enough to hear one another. They felt the car jerk to a stop and both of them smiled with glee. "We're home." Tyler said, placing his fin to the edge of the container.

"I'm always home when I'm with you." Josh responded sheepishly ss they were taken out of the car and into their new home. Tyler couldn't wait to see Josh again inside their tank, together.

His container was opened as he fell into his bowl and he swam around with gusto, too elated to even see anything in the tank. "We made it Josh. We have a home!" He shouted on the top of his lungs, slowing down to find Josh. He swam slowly around the bowl, becoming worried about where Josh was until he saw him at the edge of the bowl. Tyler smiled, swimming faster than he ever had before to his friend but slamming into the glass of the bowl.

"What the..?" He mumbled, rubbing his head before leaning against the bowl and seeing Josh on the other side of it, in his own bowl. His joyous mood was crushed when he realised that he and Josh wouldn't be sharing a bowl. "No, no. This can't be happening. It was supposed to be you and me. Me and you. This is all wrong." Tyler began to panic but Josh was quick to bring him back to his senses.

"Don't worry Tyler, it'll be alright. We aren't together, but we're still together. I'm home as long as I'm with you." Tyler never could be sad when he was around Josh, even if things were this bad.

"We don't have to be upset. It's still you and me buddy." Tyler could see Josh's smile through the glass, and it forced out one from him too. Josh's mood was infectious.

"Me and you."

"Tyler?" Josh whispered softly against the glass bowl. "Yea Josh?" Despite their beautifully decorated bowls, they spent most of their days swimming close to the edge of their bowls so they were always close to one another.

"I don't feel well." Josh said meekly, avoiding staring at his best friend to keep his emotions in check. "What do you mean by not well?"

"I'm dying, Tyler. I don't think I'm gonna make it another day." He'd known he was sick for along time but he never wanted to tell Tyler because he never wanted him to worry. "I just wanted to tell you.." Josh trailed off when he realised that Tyler had vanished and felt his heart ache until he saw Tyler swimming from the other end and jumping upwards. He hit against the edge of the bowl and dropped back into the water. He shook his head as he felt slightly disorientated but quickly got a grip on himself.

"What are you doing?" Josh asked as he stared at Tyler who was swimming back to the opposite end. "I'm going to jump the bowl into yours," he said, swimming back as fast as he could upwards and jumped up, hitting the bowl once again as he just couldn't get high enough.

"Stop it, Tyler. You can't get across." Josh was defeated as he watched Tyler continue to try to jump the bowls. "I have to try, Josh. I won't let you die alone."

"You can't do it Tyler," Josh said when Tyler fell bsck into the water a fourth time. "I have to try. We promised that we'd be together. I'm not giving up, Josh. I can't stop." So he didn't. He tried again, and again, and again. His head began to hurt from the constant collisions but he didn't know how to stop. He wouldn't stop. If he gave up, then his promise would be broken and he didn't want that.

"Tyler, please." Josh whimpered weakly as Tyler floated in front of him, trying to stop his vision from going black. "It's okay, Tyler. Wherever you are is home for me, and if I'm home, I'm happy."

Tyler slowly swam to the edge of the glass and they both put their fins to it.

"You and me." Josh forced a weak smile as he struggled to breathe beneath the water.

"Me and you."

"Forever."
