If I believe you - The 1975

Summary

Josh and Tyler meet at summer camp.

•••••

"Make sure you put on extra sun block before you go outside, and mosquito repellant. You know what those spots do to you," Tyler's frantic mother listed as she pulled her baby into a hug. It was just two short weeks at Camp Iniwaka but to her she was sending her beloved angel off to war. "I know mom," Tyler groaned out, trying to make the hug as brief as possible but he was completely trapped in her grip until she decided she'd been embarrassing enough.

"Oh, and I packed extra underwear; just in case." Her eyes were welling up with overemotional tears as she petted his head until he snaked out of her grasp.

"Moooooom, I'll be fine. Go now." Tyler said, shooing his frenetic mother and stoic father back to the car. His father got in eagerly, wanting to rush back home before he missed the beginning of his football game but his mother peeked out of the car window once more. "I love you Tyler," She called out lovingly.

"Love you too mom," Tyler responded just loud enough for her to hear as the car pulled out of the parking lot and her face disappeared into the distance. With a loud sigh, Tyler turned around to the place he'd be calling home for the next fifteen days.

Tyler laid his two suitcases in front of one of the four vacant beds; he chose the one furthest from the door in the corner of the small cabin. The three other people he'd be sharing it with hadn't arrived yet and Tyler was relishing in the silence it gave him as he slid his cases under the bed and collapsed onto the lumpy mattress with a groan.

His silence was short lived because moments later the door was opened and he peered out of the corner of his eye to see two people step in; undoubtedly his new roommate and his mother. "No no, this is no good," she said as she examined the room, clearly as overwrought as his own.

"This place is far too dusty. It'll flare up your asthma." She dusted the bed for emphasis and left her son to groan. "I'm fiiiiiine mom. I haven't had an asthma attack in over a year."

"Okay baby," she said with a slightly worried demeanour and pulled him into a hug. "I put your inhaler in your briefcase. Just in case." She gave him a loving kiss on the cheek, which he groaned at.

"Mom. I'm fifteen. Come on." She scoffed, giving a mock stern look. "You're still my sugarbear." She pulled him in for one last hug, knowing he wouldn't let her overstay her welcome. "Take your vitamins, alright? They're already packed. And make some friends, Josh. There's some really pretty girls here." Josh's eyes grew wide as his face went flush and he dragged his mother out of the room.

"Okay. Thanks mom. I'll see you soon." He shut the door with an exasperated sigh before she could get another word in, pressing his back to it and slumping to the floor.

Josh's gaze locked on Tyler, who was now sitting upright in bed and watching Josh with a look of amusement.

"Can we please pretend that never happened?" Josh murmured.
