Spike’s POV
Where’s my phone? I was supposed to call Charles at eleven tonight, but I can’t find it. Dammit, is it in Ellie’s room? If I slip in quietly, I might be able to find it… Oh that’s right, I put it in her purse when we went to the movies today.
We went with Addie and her brother, Lucas. It was nice, I guess. Lucas was head-over- heels for Ellie and spent the entire time flirting with her. The most annoying part of it was, he is really ripped AND two years older. But then again, Ellie barely paid him any mind so I guess it worked out okay. I don’t think Addie likes Ellie, and I know Ellie just feels awkward around us. But she’s trying to be nice, at least. Addie glares at Ellie whenever she asks a simple question.
I open the door to Ellie’s room quietly. I keep it open a crack for the light and so it won’t make noise. Ellie forgot to close the blinds though, so moonlight streamed through the room falling across her sleeping body. She looks so peaceful, happy and cute too, in her over sized t-shirt. I feel bad because I haven’t seen her this content since we got here. Ellie really isn’t used to living with a family. Every moment, it seems, she feels awkward about joining in. I get that she wants me to have time with my family and not bother anyone, but my entire family loves her. Honestly, I don’t think my mom would mind if Ellie jumped in for a couple pictures with the family, but she holds back. She always overthinks things. She doesn’t want to be intrusive but she also wants to participate.
I tip-toe over to the desk where Ellie’s purse sits.
“Spike?”
“Huh,” I jump around to see Ellie sitting bolt up right. Damn her cat-like senses.
“What are you doing?”
“I was just getting my phone. Sorry for waking you,” I say, grabbing my phone and trying to rush out of the room.
“Transform.”
“What?”
“Transform. I woke up because I sensed a Kishin soul around here. Transform.” I transform instantly, and in some miraculous way, she is in her battle outfit.
She grabs my hilt and jumps out the window, racing down the street.
“It’s in one of these buildings. It must be one of the ones that preys on sleeping victims.” Just as she says this, a scream bursts from the building in front of us.
Ellie’s POV
I jump through the open window of the unfamiliar building and see a massive Kishin. It looks like it is cornering someone in the bedroom.
“Hey, bud,” I kick the creature out of the window, into the street, “sorry to interrupt, but I have to kill you now.”
“Naaasstyy girll… That was myyyy preeeeyyyy,” the creature says, lunging at me.
“Sorry, not today,” I say dodging his attack and swinging Spike down onto his back.
“Hisssss. Bratty girl… I will kill youuu first,” and he lunges again.
This time I know his attack style. I rush forward, bringing Spike down on his back again, because he leaves it unprotected when he lunges. As soon as it makes contact, the monster bursts into a red gas and the egg appears. Spike grabs it and swallows.
“Oh my god.” I look up to see a girl staring at me in the broken window of the apartment we just broke into, mouth gaping. Then she falls backward onto the floor.
“Addie!” Spike is up there in an instant, holding her. Addie. Of course, it had to be Addie that got attacked by the Kishin soul.
“I had no idea that you were so strong, Ellie. I thought for sure I was a goner,” she says from her place in Spike’s arms.
“Uh, ya, no problem,” I mumble and hop down out of the building. I sit with my back against the bricks of the apartment complex. I will just wait here until Spike finishes up. He hops down three minutes later.
“We all good here?”
“Yup,” he replies simply.
We walk quietly back to his house. We’re going home tomorrow morning and I can’t wait. I love Spike’s family and all but, I just want my own apartment back. I miss my friends and I miss school, as bad as that sounds. I guess Spike’s friends were nice, but I like mine a lot more. Anyways, I want to figure out what Matsukaze meant by ‘kitten’. Did she get one for herself? Or did she just see one? Or did she get me one? I couldn’t hear with all the screaming in the other end of the receiver.
“Ellie?”
“Hmm?”
“Did you have a nice trip?”
“Yes, did you?”
“Kinda, sorta. Now you see why I like the DWMA so much more though, right? I mean Addie’s great, but she’s SO clingy. And my other friends are meatheads. And my family is SO overbearing.” Did he just say that Addie is clingy? I can’t hide the smile erupting from my face.
“I get what your saying,” I say, leaning onto him, “and our friends at school are our family now too. I miss them.”
“Ya. I do too.” We leap up into my bedroom.
“Goodnight Spike,” I say laying down on my bed.
“Night Ellie,” he says walking out of my room, closing the door behind him.
