Cameron’s POV

I run my hand through my hair as we walk up the path to Ellie’s parents’ house.  It’s a pretty house with a neat front porch, with flowers and rocking chairs.

Ellie opens the door without knocking.  I pause, taking a deep breath before following her in.

“Ellie, honey you’re here! I’m so glad you could make it,” a woman says, wrapping Ellie in her arms.

That’s Maka.

“Hello, Mrs. Evans.”

“Oh, Cameron! Hello! If you wouldn’t mind, please call me Maka. I never really got used to being Mrs. Evans,” she says laughing.

From farther in the house, I hear Soul chuckle.

“Dinner will be ready in a few minutes, dear,” Maka says to Ellie, before walking into the kitchen.

Ellie leads me into a room that would have to be the living room.

“I’d take you to my room if I had one,” she says, half- kidding.

“Don’t be so gloomy,” Claire says, walking into the room.

Ellie whisper yells, “That fool took my room.”

Claire laughs happily; her pixie cut swishing in the early evening light.

Eva walks in, “Hey, Cameron. Loser.”

Ellie rolls her eyes at the low blow.

A tall boy with blonde, spiky hair walks into the room.

“Girls, play nice.”

“Stephen, your one to talk. You were always a dirty fighter,” a beautiful girl says, as she walks into the room.  In her arms, lays a sleeping baby.

Stephen walks up to me and sticks out his hand, “You must be the new weapon. Hi.  I’m Elizabeth’s older brother, Stephen.  This is my wife, Lilly, and our daughter, Isabella.”

“Uh, Cameron,” I say stupidly, shaking his hand.

Behind me, Ellie gags, “Elizabeth? Seriously? That brings back the days. ‘Elizabeth don’t talk about creepy things.’ ‘Elizabeth, be nice.’ ‘Elizabeth, why are you so strange?’”

Stephen just pokes her playfully.

“EVA, WERE YOU IN MY ROOM AGAIN,” a voice yells, “I SWEAR TO DEATH. WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT GOING IN MY ROOM?”

“I DIDN’T GO IN YOUR STINKING ROOM,” Eva screams back.

The baby wakes up and starts crying.  Lilly leaves the room, bouncing the sobbing baby in her arms.

“YES YOU DID BECAUSE-“

Stephen covers the mouth of the young boy that rounds the corner.

“We have company,” he says simply to the boy.

“Jeez, we aren’t ‘company’. I’m your sister if you don’t forget,” Ellie argues.

“Barely,” Eva mutters under her breath.

“You got a problem?” Ellie is standing up leaning over Eva.

“Calm down, everyone,” Stephen tries to mediate.

Ellie starts yelling at him, Eva and the little boy argue, and the baby screams in the background.

“Dinners ready,” Maka calls, and immediately everyone calms down.

Everyone sits around the dining room table.  To my right, a pouty Ellie sits.  To my left, the still nameless little boy sits.

Discussion starts and everyone breaks off into their own conversations.  I sit watching everyone.
