Spike’s POV

I walk behind Ellie slowly and try to catch my breath.  After leaving her house, she walked a solid block, staring intently ahead.  Then she bolted.  She ran so hard, and for so long I began to question if she was human.  Never once did she look back.  I followed behind, trying to keep up, but I couldn’t.  We raced through eight towns, two small cities and on many busy roads before she finally slowed to a walk.

We are standing on a beautiful walking bridge, with a large river traveling underneath of us.  The sun is setting and there is the quiet lull of dinnertime, where no one is outside and everyone is focused on their families.

She stands several yards away, her white hair blowing softly and her skirt rustling a little in the light breeze.

I stay silent, waiting for her to talk.  I can’t see her face, only her back.

Then she screams.  It is a long, angry, painful scream that rips my heart out of my chest.  She holds her head and falls to her knees, screaming.  After what feels like forever, the scream subsides to be replaced with sobs.

I walk up slowly, placing a hand on her shoulder.  She keeps crying, so I sit down, cross-legged next to her.  I pull her into me and hold her like that.

I can’t say anything.  She needs to let this out of her.  This anger, this sadness, this feeling of desertion.  She has lived too long in desolation, pretending everything was okay.  Her family is her Achilles Heel.  My beautiful, impenetrable meister’s only weakness is the thing that is supposed to always provide love and support.  Life is ironic isn’t it, I think to myself, almost laughing.  It gives us such a perfect person like Ellie, but always must give something to torment them.

Suddenly, life makes a lot more sense to me.  Everyone has something that they must combat.  Ellie never has to worry about beating an enemy, or scoring well on a test, she just can.  But the one thing that is a constant for so many people, she doesn’t have, which makes everything so much harder.  The rest of us have to combat the logistics of life, but this is Ellie’s only battle and right now she feels like she is losing.

I am going to murder the bastards that did this to her.  If they hadn’t fucking taken her from the hospital she wouldn’t have to deal with this.  Those bastards.  I grip her arm and pull her closer to me.

“I love you…”

She pulls back in my arms and looks me in the eyes.  What the hell did I just say?

“I love you too,” she says and she puts on her brave face.

“C’mon, let’s find these bastards and make them pay for this,” I say, giving her a smile.

“That’s just what I was thinking,” she says pulling herself up, “I know where they are.”

“And where’s that?”

“London, but we have to deal with something before we get on a plane to go there.”

“What?”

“They’re trying to track us…”

“What? Who? How?”
“Our friends back home.  Using Eva and my spiritual connection as twins.  I can feel her pulling on my soul using the Twin Bond.  Oh, and they’re actively coming this way.”

“Crap.  Alright should we move or stay?”

“I say, stay and see what happens.”

We sit there until about eleven at night when the party races up to us.

“Ellie!! Are you fucking insane? Why are you here,” Fury says racing up to where we are sitting.

“We are here to tell you to go home.  This is a mission that I need to finish for myself-“

“No! It’s dangerous,” Eva yells at her, “As much as I hate you, I can’t let my twin sister die…”

“I can win,” Ellie says simply.

“It’s not about winning,” Tristan growls.

“It’s about settling something from long ago.  Something that doesn’t involve you guys,” Ellie half- explains.

“Are you an idiot? Do you think we can let you do this? I don’t know what your doing, but I know it is jeopardizing your life, and I can’t let that happen,” Matsukaze yells.

“And besides, I seriously doubt that Spike is involved in this past.  Why is he coming,” Jasper quietly questions.

“He’s my partner.  I can’t do this without him...”

“And we’re your team. Using that logic you have to take us too,” Fury spats.

“Either you go with us or you don’t go at all,” Tristan says.

To everyone’s surprise Ellie smiles.

“What the hell is that smile supposed to mean,” Matsukaze yells.

“You all passed.   I’ll take you with me.  I needed to hear that before we left though.”

Everyone let’s out a deep breath of relief and I can’t help but smile.  Ellie played them well…

“It’s going to be dangerous.  Your lives will be in peril, and you might not be coming back from this.”

“Hah, when are we ever assured the safety of our lives?  We’re child warriors, we understand the risk,” Eva scoffs.

“And besides, if it’s this important to you, then it’s important to us.  You’re the unspoken leader of our team, and honestly I’d follow you blindly into battle any day.  I trust you Ellie, and this bastard, whoever they are, needs to die,” Jasper says.

Everyone looks surprised for a second but then they all nod and say their agreement.

Ellie smirks, “Everyone okay with flying?”
“Ya, why?”

“Good, we’re going to England.”
