I run up the DWMA stairs.  I can’t believe I’m late to my first day of classes.  My train broke down. I fling open the massive doors, panting.  I run my hand through my short, orange hair looking down the hallways to my right and my left.  In front of me there is a perfectly centered staircase, with matching vases on both sides.  Jeez, this place is really symmetrical.

Along the sides of the hallway there are window seats with long curtains that drape all the way to the floor. There sits a girl reading.  Her white hair cascades down the side of her face.  She is the only sign of life in this hallway.

“Hey.  Could you help me? I’m new here and I don’t know where to go to sign in.  Where do I go? I’m Cameron, by the way.”

She slowly looks up, trying to finish her sentence.  Wow, she is stunning.  Her eyes are a pale green with striking red specks, but they are dull.  She looks at me with a bored expression.

“Are you talking to me?”

“Um, yea,” I say.  Who else would I be talking to?  This place is deserted.

“And, what do you want?”

Did she really not listen to a single thing I said?
“Directions to the admissions office.  Or Lord Death’s room.  Or a receptionist. Or something.”

Instead of answering like a normal person, she simply gestures down the right hall.

“Uh, thanks,” I say, looking back, but she’s already absorbed in her book again.  What is her deal? Why isn’t she in class?

I end up in front of Lord Death’s door, miraculously.

“Um, hey,” I say pushing open the door, only to see a ridiculously long hallway leading to the actual room.

“Uh, Lord Death…”

Lord Death spins around.

“Well hello there! You must be Cameron.  Pleased to meet you,” he says sticking out a pale hand.

I shake his hand, “It’s all my pleasure.  I’m sorry I’m late but my train broke dow-“

“Never mind that, you’re here now! Let’s get you to class! We will talk about everything later! SOUL, give this boy a tour to his classroom.”

A man with greyish- white hair stands from a couch in the middle of the room, “You can stop yelling,” he grumbles.

“C’mere,” he says gesturing for me to follow him.

“Uh, alright,” I say, picking up my bag to follow him.

We walk in silence for a little while before he says, “So, what type of weapon are you?”

“I’m a scythe.”

“That’s cool.  I am too.  I am actually a Death Scythe, that’s the only reason I was hanging around the Death Chamber,” he glances over at me, “trust me, I wouldn’t spend any extra time with that loser if I didn’t have to.”

I chuckle and he smiles.

“My daughters are both scythe meisters.  Eva is probably in some of your classes.”

“Oh? How old are your daughters?”

“They are sixteen year old twins.  They look nothing alike.  I will point them out to you sometime,” he says before pointing towards a door, “This is your class.  The teacher’s name is Dr. Stein.  Sit towards the back and if he asks for a volunteer, do not, under any circumstances, raise your hand, if you value your kidneys.”

“Uh, okay.”

“Go get ‘em kid,” he says then leaves.

“Thank you,” I yell after him.

He just waves his hand behind him.

I take a deep breath and walk through the door.
