Ellie’s POV

“Ellie, where do you think your going? We’re meeting everyone out front for lunch,” Spike reminds me.

“I’m going to eat lunch with Max.”

“And who’s that,” Spike asks, eyeing me warily.

“The boy.  You know the one who attacked us?”

“Again? Why?”

“To get answers.  Why else?”

Spike huffs, “Fine.  Don’t be late for class…”

“I won’t,” I promise, spinning on my heels and heading for the dungeons.

Honestly, I’m not doing this for the answers.  The boy seems lonely and neglected.  His dull eyes always sparkle a little when I walk in.  I don’t know how I decided on Max for his name, but I like it so it’s staying.

“Hey Max,” I say, pushing the door open with my foot, carrying the food tray.

“Max?”

“Yup, Max.  That’s your name,” I say matter-of-factly.

“Hm. Okay,” he says, grabbing a roll off the tray and biting into it.

We talk about everything from sports to the color of my bedroom.  It’s just nice, and I think it’s helping him.  That’s what I tell myself at least.  The time passes before I know it and I have to get to class.

I return the tray to the cafeteria and look at the clock.  I’m running late, crap.  I rush into the room but Professor Marie has already started lecturing.

I blush, “I’m so sorry-“

“It’s fine, Ellie.  It’s not as if you need this class anyways,” Marie says.

“No-,” I try to explain that I do need her class.

“No, Ellie it’s fine.  I meant I don’t care if you even show up to class because the work is too easy for you.”

Now my face is red, “Thank you, mam. I’ll take my seat now.”

“You do that,” she says before turning back to the board.

“I thought I told you to be on time,” Spike hisses, “It makes me look like a bad weapon.”

“Shut up.”

Fury’s POV

I love the way Spike looks at Ellie.  I love how protective he is of her.  I love how he relies on her, I think staring at them whispering to each other during class.  I blink and look at my meister.  Tristan leans back, taking his notes in his lap.  I wish we had their relationship.  Sometimes, I think Tristan takes me for granted.  Other times I think he thinks I’m too confident in myself, so he doesn’t have to be worried about me.

Ellie and Spike’s souls are entwined.  If that doesn’t show love, then I don’t know what does.  They are just so damn adorable together.  And, in their own way, so are Matsukaze and Jasper.  He is so patient with her, caring.  Jasper never snaps at her, he only cares.  Matsukaze leans on him as she sleeps and he continues to take notes.

Tristan will yell at me.  I’m not some dumb girl who will listen to everything he says, but I’m also not perfect Ellie.  I think that’s what he needs emotionally.  He is still head-over-heels in love with her.  I’m strong and confident, so he doesn’t have superiority over me.  Maybe that’s what annoys him. Mmm, that’s probably it, I think, flicking my braid off my shoulder.  What I would give for him to look at me the way Spike looks at Ellie.  That adoration.  That trust.  That love.  I don’t think Tristan and I will ever have that… I don’t think Ellie knows how great she has it with Spike.  Sure, they bicker, but he really cares about her. Tristan and my relationship feels strictly business.  We fight well together, but it’s hard to resonate.  Maybe he still resents the fact that he’s my meister and not Ellie’s weapon.

“Hey, Fury.  Class is over,” Tristan says, poking me on the shoulder.

“Oh, okay. Right,” I say, jolting out of my thoughts.

“So, I saw a mission that looks pretty good for us,” Tristan says as we stroll down the hall.

“Oh, cool.”

“Do you want to go now?”

“Sure, whatever,” I say, fixing my backpack.

“Alright, let’s go sign up for it.”

The mission ends up being in a town twenty minutes outside of Death City.  It’s a young kishin soul, that hasn’t fully developed its fighting techniques.  It takes two swings and Tristan defeats the thing.  I swallow the soul and turn to go back to the train.

“Hey, everything okay Fury? You’ve seemed out of it since we were on campus,” Tristan asks as he walks next to me.

“Ya, fine.”

“You don’t have to lie to me.”

I swallow.  Should I tell him what I was thinking? Well, better now then never.

“I wish our relationship was more like some of our friend’s.  Like Spike and Ellie, and Matsukaze and Jasper.  They’re such good partners… And we’re-“

“You don’t think we are good partners?” Tristan’s face is a mixture of surprise and hurt.

“No, I think we’re okay.  I mean we fight well together.  But emotionally, don’t you think there’s a barrier between us?”

“No, not really.  I’m comfortable with you.  I’m just not Spike.  I’m not as protective and open about my feelings.  I didn’t know that was a bad thing…”

“No, it’s not.  It’s jus-“

“Then we’re all good here,” Tristan interrupts me and brushes past me to step on the train.

What the hell?
