CHAPTER SIX: THE CIGARETTE
"I'm beginning to be really scared for Lola", Aubrey says between breaths. "I think she understands that my parents don't love each other anymore".
Aubrey told me that today her mom had thrown a vase on the floor out of rage, and it had shattered all over Lola's feet; and the worst part, she didn't even seem to notice that Lola was standing before her.
"You might want to fill her in on what's happening", I say breathlessly. "You know, so she can prepare herself for what's going to happen any time now".
I can't believe that her parents are being so selfish. They should at least have the decency to fight in private or even acknowledge their youngest daughter's presence. The parents Aubrey is describing to me, aren't the parents I know them to be. They are almost like parents to me and the fact that they're acting like this breaks my heart.
"I don't know if she would fully understand; she's only four".
We begin to decrease our running pace when Aubrey's house comes into view.
"But she's old enough to understand that things are changing at home. Try to explain to her what's going on in the most simple way you can", I say softly.
She nods her head but keeps her gaze ahead from her.
I really feel bad for Aubrey. She fears the thought of going home every night but she knows she can't leave Lola alone with them. I know she wants this to end just for everyone's sake but deep down, I think she actually wants her parents to work it out even though she knows it'll never happen.
"I just can't wait for all of this to be over", she says sounding helpless.
There's nothing more than I would want right now than to hug her and tell her everything will be alright; but I've been doing that for a while now and it just keeps getting worse.
Instead I just wrap my hand on her upper arm and give it an affectionate squeeze.
Once we reach her house, we say our goodbyes and I head home in a slow jogging pace.
We have only been running for about half an hour so I still have some energy left in me.
Running's my therapy. Whenever I have something on my mind I just grab my Saucony running shoes and head outside. I always feel free and happy when I'm outside in the cool air with my headphones on my ears and my legs moving to the beat of the music.
Unlike me, Aubrey only runs because she wants to keep herself in shape for the speed skating season. She doesn't particularly enjoy running as much as I do, but skating is her life and she would do anything to exceed in it.
She is a very competitive person. She may seem sweet and careless but when it's time to compete, she turns into a completely different person; at a point where it even scares me sometimes.
***
As I am about three blocks from my house, I can see a small cloud of smoke coming from the house next to mine.
I furrow my eyebrows and quicken my pace to see what is going on.
It's strange seeing this since it's only a small cloud, and it's not big enough to be smoke coming out of a chimney or smoke from a fire. It's as like someone is-
