CHAPTER TWELVE: THE NIGHT TRAIN
"Shit, I had forgotten about that", I say to Aubrey through the phone that was placed between my ear and my shoulder while I flipped through the pages of a magazine.
She giggles. "Yeah, I'm sorry I can't ditch it and go see you instead", she says.
I shake my head but then I realise that she can't see me. "Don't be silly this is your cousin's wedding you couldn't miss that", I respond. "I would call Connor but I'm not really over what happened last night".
"Even if you wanted him to go see you he couldn't. He's also going to be at the wedding", she says.
I furrow my eyebrows. "Since when?" I ask her, turning another page of my magazine.
"He told me the other day that he was going to be there because he's apparently related with my cousin's fiancé in some way", she responds.
That's odd; Connor didn't mention that to me. Maybe it didn't come up or maybe he just didn't want me to know that he was going to be there with Aubrey from fear that I was going to bug him about it; which I would've probably done.
"Well I'm going to let you finish getting ready", I say, "have a good time and remember what I told you last night".
I press the end button on my phone with a smirk on my face before Aubrey has the time to question me about my last statement.
Even though I wasn't quite happy with Connor at the moment, I did care about him and I wanted him to be happy and I wanted Aubrey to be with a good guy for once. And at least they were going to have a better night than I was.
Gentry is hosting a goodbye party at our house tonight while our parents are gone once again at some event. They're attending some kind of banquet with my dad's co-workers. They usually don't go out often on the weekends but they've been gone for two nights now; which is odd.
Now because of the party that was going on downstairs, I was stuck in my room with no other than myself for the whole evening. Gentry had banned me from going downstairs and quite frankly I didn't want to go. Potheads and druggies weren't really my crowd as hard as that may to believe.
Please do note the sarcasm in my last statement.
It was only 9:00 and I was already on my last magazine to read and I had finished my book for English class. I never thought a book that boring existed. It may have taken me only two days to read it but it was because I couldn't wait to get it over with. I couldn't even believe that someone would actually buy that book and take the time to read it for fun.
After flipping through the last pages of the magazine I throw it on the floor with the rest of them and get up from my bed to change into a pair of leggings and a baggy NYU sweatshirt. My mom had bought me that sweatshirt when we had gone to visit the University last year. I had to admit I liked the place, but it wasn't really where I imagined myself going to study; much to my mom's dislike.
After throwing on a pair of wool socks and slipping on my Birkenstock sandals, I untie my hair from its high ponytail and let them fall loosely into waves over my shoulders.
Not wanting to witness or hear anything that was going on downstairs, I make my way to the window and climb on the borders of it. I twist my body so that I am facing the other way and out my entire body outside; paying attention to every sound that was happening around me, so that I wouldn't get scared and fall off of the window. Without wasting any time, I climb up onto the roof and sit down hugging my knees to my chest. I look up over me and look at the stars that were illuminating the sky on this clear evening. From where I was sitting, they looked amazing. This was one of the rare places in New York that you could actually see the stars.
