CHAPTER SEVEN: THE INVITE
Today is Friday. Also known as the day we get our book test results. I have waited all week for this dreadful day. This is going to be the day my parent's will receive a phone call from the school saying that their honor student daughter just failed her first test. I might as well go pick out my tombstone after school because my parents don't have good taste.
Aubrey, sitting beside me, is in the same state as I am. Maybe she isn't the honor student of the school but she still gets good grades and if she fails a test that is going to give her parents another reason to fight.
The teacher started delivering the tests about a minute ago and my heart is beginning to beat faster and faster with every step she makes towards me.
When the teacher drops Aubrey's test on her test she looks at it and a surprised expression flashes in her face. She smiles down at her test before turning to look at me.
I furrow my eyebrows. "How'd you do?"
She looks at her test and back at me in disbelief. "B".
She got what now?
I take the test from her hands and stare at the big red B written on the top of her paper. "How did you-"
She lets out a surprised huff of laughter. "I have no clue".
Her good grade gives me a little hope that maybe I haven't failed my test either. But all that hope comes crashing down when the teacher drops my test on the desk. Instead of a big fat B I get a big fat F.
How did Aubrey actually manage to get a B. Maybe the teacher likes Aubrey as a student and decided to give her a chance. But what do I ever do wrong not to get a chance like that? I always do my homework, I rarely disrupt the class, and I'm always polite with her.
Does she realise that this is probably going to be my last class with her?
When the bell rings, I gather my things and get up from my seat to follow Aubrey out the door, but something stops me.
"Adria, may I have a word with you?" the teacher asks from behind me. I spin on the balls of my feet slowly to face her.
She's sitting at her desk with her hands intertwined on the wooden surface. She's looking at me seriously without any hint of happiness or sadness.
I nod my head and take a seat opposite of her.
"May I ask you what happened on your book exam?" she asks sternly.
I swallow and look at her with my fingers fidgeting on my lap. "I um...failed?" I say my statement sounding more like a question. I don't know why she asks me this, she's the one who failed be so she knows what happened.
She shakes her head and gets up from her desk only to make her way around it to lean on the edge of it.
"Did you read the book Miss Tanner?"
I lower my head in defeat. "No", I mumble only loud enough for her to hear.
She shakes her head in disapproval. I'm not even going to try to make up an excuse because it isn't worth it. So maybe it's my fault, but it isn't my fault that Aaron's family had so much stuff to move.
