CHAPTER FIFTEEN: THE ASSIGNED SEATS

To say the car ride to school was awkward this morning was an understatement. Going to school naked for a day would probably be more pleasant than this. But then again, Aaron has already seen me naked, so that wouldn’t really change anything.

Okay so Aaron and I had almost shared a kiss Saturday night and he had been a total dick head about it, but that was no reason for this car ride to be awkward right? I mean, we always fight and get on each other’s nerves so this time shouldn’t be different. But for some reason it is.

As much as I wanted to kick him in the balls for saying what he did about the night train situation, I had to do something about this awkwardness since we have to ride to school every day together.  This daily drive was already unpleasant as it was, so it doesn’t need to get worse.

“So, the weather is nice today”, I say breaking the silence between us, wanting to hit myself in the face after for just saying that. You could say that my brain doesn’t really work well under pressure.

He lets out a huff of laughter and crosses his arms over his chest. “Sure sweetheart”, he says, clearly amused with my failed attempt to make conversation.

I let out a sigh. This was no use. I should’ve known that small talk wasn’t really Aaron’s thing. Hell, it wasn’t even mine.

“Look, I’m just trying to make this car ride less awkward since you and I have to endure each other every morning”, I say seriously, since what I said before clearly wasn’t serious enough for him.

“Talking about the weather is a very cliché way to do that”, he responds, the amusement still very pleasant in his voice.

I roll my eyes. “You want to talk about cliché? You Aaron are the most cliché person I have ever seen. Seriously, the bad boy act and I-don’t-care-about-anything façade is probably the oldest trick in the book”, I spit back harshly satisfied with my answer. Take that Mr. Badass Cowboy.

“Ouch, that hurts my heart sweetheart”, Aaron says putting a hand over his heart to fake hurt.

I let out an annoyed groan. “Oh sorry, I didn’t realise you had a heart”, I say innocently with a small smirk hovering over my lips.

He lets out a small huff of laughter, but doesn’t respond. Well at least we were back to our normal selves. Who would’ve known that insulting him was the way to do that? I should’ve done that the minute he entered the car.

When we arrive at school, I park Theresa in her usual parking spot next to Aubrey’s car and turn the keys in the ignition in order to stop it. As soon as the car stops, Aaron opens the door and scrams towards the school without saying a word to me.

Your welcome for the ride Aaron, it was my pleasure, as always.

I grab the book from English class and my purse from the back seat before exiting the car to go meet Aubrey.

To my surprise, she was still sitting in her car with both of her hands on the wheel. I knock on her window, which makes her jump a little and she twists her head towards me. She had this anxious and concerned look on her face. I furrow my eyebrows and open her driver’s door.
