"We have eight hours, if Slenderman doesn't get us first. First page should be the one in the bathhouse, and let's avoid using the torch," Dan said.
I nodded, and we took off towards the middle of the arena, careful not to run. You run, you lose stamina.
There was no noise other than the occasional cricket and our breathing. From the articles we'd read, I knew the creepy music didn't start until you found the first page.
"Do you think talking will let him know we're here?" Dan asked.
"I don't know. He's not allowed to come after us until we find the first page, unless we take too long."
"Right."
We walked on in silence, the gravity of our situation setting in. If we failed, Phil would never see the sun again, and neither would we. Nighttime sounds accompanied our walk, occasionally giving Dan or I a mini heart attack.
Time passed in silence until we came upon the bathhouse. Dan turned on the flashlight and we stepped in. Left, left, right. He seemed to be going in no particular order as he regarded each path before charging ahead. He scoured the walls for a page, but all we saw were two chairs, one overturned.
"Where is the bloody page?" Dan muttered under his breath.
"Is it just not here? I know in one video there wasn't one."
Dan shrugged. "Maybe." He seemed dissatisfied, though.
We looked at all the walls again, but there was no page. I led the way out after Dan turned off the torch and walked behind me, muttering to himself. Unfortunately, I had no idea which direction we needed to go in in order to reach the rusty tankers.
"Dan?" I asked.
"Yeah?" he absentmindedly answered.
"Do you know which direction we're supposed to be going in?"
His head jolted up and he looked around at the dark forest surrounding us. Nothing was distinguishable except the closest trees, looming above us like giant Dementors.
I took his silence as a no.
"Eenie, meenie, miny, moe," I said pointing in four directions.
"Left," Dan said when my finger landed in that direction. "Let's hope for the best."
I half-nodded and began to walk in that direction. We walked for several moment when i began to get bored. I absentmindedly started humming an unknown tune. It became timed with my walk, and I started wracking my brain for the words that were just out of reach.
"Uh, Susan, why are you humming that right now?" Dan asked, swaying the torch left to right.
"I don't even know what it is," I confessed.
"You're humming 'I Can't Help Falling In Love.'"
"What're the words?" I asked. I hate not knowing words.
So Dan decided to sing.
"Wise men say,
Only fools rush in,
But I can't help falling in love with you.Shall I stay,
Would it be a sin,
If I can't help falling in love with-" he stopped. "Do you hear that?"I stopped walking and strained my ears to listen. At first I didn't hear anything, but my ears picked something up. Under the sound of crickets and owls, was music. Terrifying music, that signified we'd dawdled. Slenderman was coming after us.
"Let's get moving," I said, walking a little faster than I was a minute ago.
"Agreed."
Soon Dan and I were almost running in order to get to what he hoped was the rusted tankers. I started panting and wondered how far we were from anything. All that surrounded us were trees. Giant dark looming trees. Nothing was distinguishable and nothing looked different. I couldn't see the stars. I couldn't tell where we were going. Darkness and trees. Darkness and trees. Darkness. Trees. Darkness. No stars. No stars. Trees. Dark. Trees. Breathing. Screaming. Darkness. Trees. Screams. Breaths. Trees and darkness.
I started to feel dizzy and began to hyperventilate. The world was swirling, and all I saw were darkness and trees. Where was Dan with the torch? Had I lost him? Was he lost? We were both lost and separate from each other, lost in these endless woods of sameness and darkness. Where was Phil? Why couldn't I remember where he was? I should be able to run to where he was, cut his chains and leave. The three of us could leave these woods of darkness and sameness.
Breathing became harder. I couldn't see and couldn't think. I swaggered like a drunk. I couldn't stand up straight. What was wrong with me?
My foot caught on a root, and I fell.
