Chapter 23

“Give me one sec, I need to check my make-up.” I told Sarah and the others who were busy chatting about Friday, the day school closed and the night of Sarah’s big sleepover party.

Apparently more people were invited, and Sarah made it a huge group of about 50 or more people. Only a few boys were invited though.

Ash was too.

It was an excuse, about me checking my make-up. I had already checked it 4 times this morning and anyway, I needed to get away from them so I could talk to Lauren.

What Ash had told me had been eating away at me all day. His visit last night made me stay up almost until dawn.

I had to apologize to Lauren, I owed her as much.

I found her by Hannah’s, another unpopular girl, locker. She was probably waiting for Hannah because she stood impatiently, biting her nails.

Her face turned hard as stone and hurt, betrayal and anger flashed up in her eyes all at once. She scowled at me as I swayed my hips over to her, a thing that Sarah made me do.

“it’s the way we walk,” she had said…

Whatever, I just went along with it.

“What do you want?” Lauren snapped.

“I came to apologize. I’m sorry-“

“Oh cut the crap, Taylor. I never knew you were this dumb. Like, seriously. How could you?” her voice shook. The last thing I’d want is her to start crying. That’ll probably just cause a scene and make everyone think that I’m an even more terrible person.

I’m not a bad person!...

“I thought you were my best friend, but friends don’t do that to each other. All this time I’ve been helping you, even when you kind of blew me off because you were too busy getting all lovey-dovey with Sam and being mad at Ash.”

She wiped away a tear.

“But this is way too much. Humiliating me because of Sarah? Don’t you know all the things she did to you? Or do you amnesia or something?”

I clenched my jaw.

“But I’m not going to cry over you anymore, because you’re just a selfish, arrogant little conceited bitch. Just like Sarah and all those fake whores.”

Tears stung in my eyes but I refused to let them roll down my cheeks. I blinked them back keeping a plain face.

“All I came here to do was apologize, didn’t expect you to get so dramatic and cry me a speech.” I snorted and flipped my hair, just like Sarah always did when she insulted someone.

Lauren’s eyes burned with fury. “Don’t stay out too long in the sun, plastic melts, you fake bitch.”

I gasped and she stomped away.

Did she really say that to me?

“Taylor! There you are!” Sarah ran over to me in her stilettos. “Babes, come on! You have to help me prepare the whole party.” She linked arms with me and started talking about the party but my mind was off, wondering, thinking. Replaying conversations with the two people in my heart that I had (do I still do?) loved (love?) in the world.

Lauren and Ash had both pushed me away, both got their revenge.

I forced a smile for Sarah and as she started giggling about how big of a loser a girl names Brandy was for thinking that she would be invited to the sleepover.

“Yeah, what a pathetic little wimp.” I rolled my eyes.

“I know right!” Sarah agreed and I caught yet another icy glare from one student. She raised an eyebrow as if she’d say ‘Got what you wanted?’

I shot her look that said, ‘let me get back to you on that one’
