Chapter 4
I put my tray on the table and sat beside Ash. He smiled at me and scooted over a little so I’d have more room.
“Hey,” I bit into my apple.
“Hi, so I was thinking want to-“ Ash started but everybody went quiet. Me and Ash looked at the cafeteria door as it opened.
Sarah Smith with her friend Blair and a couple of other cheerleaders (guys and girls) were walking in, Sarah in front as always. She scanned the room, smirking, and sat down at the biggest table at the back of the cafeteria.
Everybody was staring at them, obviously thinking “I wish I was in the IN GROUP.”
Then the craziest thing happened. Sarah got up and walked over to us. Me and Ash’s table. We weren’t losers, we were normal. Had friends but weren’t...well, that popular.
So when Sarah walked over to us everybody was gaping. I’m sad to say I was too. I mean come on, she was like at the top.
She smiled. “Can I sit down for a sec?”
Ash nodded. I was too dazed to do anything.
Sarah sat down beside me. “So I have this party next week, and I wanted you guys to be there.”
Ash, like always, narrowed his eyes. “What’s the catch?” I rolled my eyes. Ash, always protective, always cautious.
“No catch,” Sarah laughed, fluttering her eyelashes at Ash.
Oh no... I thought.
Then Sarah turned to me. “And Taylor, meet me in the parking lot after school. You, me and Blair are going shopping.” She winked at Ash before she got up and went back to her own table.
“Did that just happen?” I asked Ash.
Ash shrugged. “I don’t really care about plastic girls like that.”
“But we’re going, right?”
Ash bit his lower lip, a sign he was considering something.
“Pleeeaaase Ash?” I looked at him with hopeful eyes.
Ash grinned. “Fine, but only if you say I’m the best.”
I sighed. “You’re the best.”
“No, say ‘Ash you’re the bestest best friend ever.’”
“Bestest isn’t a word.”
Ash raised an eyebrow.
“Fine, fine. Ash you’re the bestest best friend ever. Happy?”
“I’m jumping with joy.”
“Oh My God! You look so good in that,” Blair purred into my ear, a little too close for my liking. I was standing in front of a mirror in a low cut maroon coloured dress with Blair on my right and Sarah on my left.
I pulled the dress down a little lower. “It’s a little short, isn’t it?”
Sarah laughed. “Short? Honey, it’s perfect. Maybe a little long, even.”
Blair disappeared and Sarah wrapped her arm around my waist. “We’re going to be awesome friends, Tay-Bear.”
I smiled nervously, then Blair appeared again with a pair of stilettos. She dropped them on the floor in front of me and I squeezed my feet into them.
“You like them, Tay-Bear?” Sarah asked.
“They fit perfectly but..” I tried to walk in them and stumbled a little.
Sarah sighed. “You’ll get used to them. Anyway, go pick out a few more dresses, it’s all on me.”
When Sarah dropped me home, I thanked her in the car before I got out.
“You don’t need to thank me, but..I do have a favour in mind.” She smirked.
“A favour? Sure, anything.” I smiled.
“Great, get me a date with Ash. You’re best friends, right?”
“Um, right.”
“Don’t let me down, little Tay.”
“Don’t let her down, Taylor!” Blair warned me from the backseat. I nodded and closed the door of her car and watched her drive away.
A date with Ash?
Suddenly all the shopping bags in my hands felt heavier than ever.
