When the nurse got the supplies out, a pediatrician walked in. The nurse left, and William, Adrianna, Jon, Kennedy, and I were the only people left besides the pediatrician. The doctor picked the clipboard up and looked through it before biting her lip dramatically. “I’m so sorry but we’re book right now. We can’t-” she stopped talking when Jon and William flipped the wallets showing her their badges just like the movie. She narrowed her eyes and bit back a rude comment before tying the rubber tie around Kennedy’s arm. Kennedy squirmed in discomfort, but I held her tight. My finger made its way into her palm, and she squeezed tightly. She got a needle with a long tip and inserted it into Kennedy’s arm. I thought the needle would go through Kennedys small arm for sure.
The needle was filled with a blood sample and Kennedy was wailing bloody murder. I lifted her back up to my chest, and quietly asked Adrianna if she ever bought Kennedy a sling. A sling for me and Kennedy. She answered a subtle no, and it was decided I’d shop later that day.
We got in the elevator while I made faces at Kennedy even though her eyes surely hadn’t been developed yet, and she wouldn’t see me. She stopped crying when I began rubbing her belly, arms, legs, and back.
We walked into the room and the first thing I saw was Niall with his arms pressing his skull together from his ears. When he saw us run into the room he engulfed me in a bone crushing hug, and Kennedy’s cry was the only thing to pull him away. Harry sat in the corner of the room, looking out the window instead of saying hello in a polite manner. “The bed was gone, and your stuff was here and the cradle was gone and you were gone and no was here,” Niall cried into my shoulder. I would have tried to comfort him if Kennedy wasn’t asleep in my arms. He pulled away, and said hello to Adrianna.
“You aren’t allowed to be here, boy,” William said as if he were a gangsters son, sneaking on his fathers devious plans. “I’ll call your management.” This was a whole other side of William neither Adrianna or I had ever witnessed. Jon seemed like it was normal.
“It’s okay,” I mumbled, trying to defuse the situation. I was wrong.
“No. Get your ass out of here, kid.” Niall raised his eyebrows.
“Don’t tell me what to do. Look - its Andrea’s room. She decides if I stay or go,” Niall’s rough accent filled the room along with tension. Harry was up and patting Niall’s shoulder. Jon walked off into the hall on the phone.
“He’s calling your management. They’ll have a word with BOTH,” he looked at us both as if it were a secret for years I’ve hid. “Of you. You stay away from her ... you stay away from him.” Jon walked back in, and two people in suits followed. One was a woman in a pencil skirt, tan with a tan suit on top. Her hair was in a tight bun, and no loosies. The man was in a suit as well, white shirt, black coat, black pants. They looked more like lawyers.
“We saw you both leave the hotel. God damnit Niall.” The woman collapsed from tension into the chair that was now pushed to the wall. “You’re always the one in trouble. Look - let it go. You two were, are, will be nothing. Nothing. At all. Zero. Zip. Nada. Blank. Get that through your mind, for god’s sakes.” She rubbed her temples. Niall looked like he was defeated. Silently, I put a hand on his elbow, showing him I was here. He just acknoledged me, and we shared a look. Are we really just nothing? I’d imagine the look saying. I wanted to say no and say yes, but the only reaction was looking down and biting my tongue. “Leave. Her. And. Her. Family. ALONE. Get that through your tiny brain!”
“Don’t be such a bitch,” I croaked. Everyone looked at me surprised. It was as if I just gotten a tongue and lips and basically a mouth. I almost turned around to actually see who said it. I was surprised myself. I was even more surprised when I continued with, “Get the tampon out of your ass hole.” She widened her eyes and shut her mouth. “This is my hospital room and if anyone is going to speak for me its Adrianna, and thats only if I’m in a coma or dead. Who gave you the right to be such a dick?”
“Excuse me? I’m his boss.”
“And he has feelings. Look, just because you don’t have a cold heart in that chest of yours doesn’t mean he doesn’t either ... or I do. So get that straight. My hospital room. My rules. His life. His choices. Don’t you know not to teach babies shit like what you’re saying.”
“Business is business kid. And what’d you mean teach babies not to say shit? You’re the whore, and your complaining to me. I’m done with this. You give me a headache. Tylenol won’t help me out tonight. Niall - leave her alone and stop making us come up here. When I saw you leave the hotel I knew you were up to no good. C’mon Morty. Thanks for the call Jon.” They began to walk out of the room before Niall stopped them.
“No.”
“What?” She turned around again and all I managed to hope for was that she’d get a even worse headaches.
“I have my own life. Stop treating me like a baby. I was fine with my teeth before. I was fine with a no-ab stomach. I was fine when I was kid napped. To be honest, I prefer abduction to being with you.”
“Then quit. Or I can fire you. Either is good.”
“Niall - stop. It’s okay-” I tried to exclaim.
“No. Stop pushing me around. Listen Mary, I’m not your bitch, okay?” She threw a hand at her chest dramatically. She seemed to be the kind of woman that had the perfect house and perfect children. Everything in perfect order. (Bree Van De Kamp. Ok if you know who she is I will love you a million and one years.)
“If you don’t like how we treat you then let us fire you. It’d be my pleasure, right here, right now.” Niall bit his lip in worry, and shrugged.
“Go ahead. Make. My. Day.” The woman was about to say something, but the man stepped up.
“You’re a rough kid, you know that? Jeez, we ain’t firing you. You’re a good kid, but rough around the edges. Don’t get on his bad side too much.” The man grabbed the woman, Mary, violently by the arm, jerking her backward to have a word. She tidied her skirt and turned back to us.
“Sorry to disturb you. Have a good night.” She then lowered her head in shame and exited my room. Niall turned slowly and pulled his arms tight around me even though I was holding Kennedy. I released a gush of air from my lungs. I’d been holding it in in anticipation of Niall getting fired because of me. Me needing him.
“I won’t leave you this time.”
